Treble Hooks
I was wanting to buy a pack of treble hooks to have some in case i need to replace any. I was just wondering how yall go about determining size. Do yall just match the size thats on the lure already or is there a guideline to follow? I dont want to have to buy a lot of packs, what size is the most universal, if there is such a thing? Also what brand do yall prefer?

depends on the lure really i like to go up 1 size. too big a hook will effect the movement of the bait.. too small a hook wont get a good hook set in fish hence lost fish..

2,4 and 6 sizes are common on many baits. I tend to replace them by using the same that came with the lure. You can buy 25 pack VMCs for about $4.50 in many places meaning if you bought 1 of each size you're out only $15 and that's no worse than buying one lucky craft. the other companies sell trebles too but none of them are as close to VMCs in terms of bang for the buck. VMC trebles are stock hooks on Rapala baits to give you an idea of their quality. I also like to use Mustad triple grips, but like I said VMC gives you the best bang for the buck.

On the cranks I use, #6 are the most often used, followed by #4, then #8. I tend to stick with the same size as the originals. I'm currently using Gamakatsu round bend, like a previous poster. One reason is that they're available here. I've used Eagle Claw, VMC, Owner and perhaps others, all of which were OK. I agree that VMC is good bang for the buck, but they've been hard to find in this area for the last few years.

I use Gamakatsu's now.You gotta crankbait model that works well ? Buy an additional crankbait and change the hook out to a Gamakatsu #5 trebles. It will alter the crankbaits action to be slightly different than the normal action. It just might put a few fish in the livewell.P N J

Mustad triple grips are my favorites. I don't usually change the hook size.

Sorry if this is a dumb question but why do you guys change your treble hooks?
Usually if I'm going to loose a treble hook, I'm going to loose the bait too! Jolly

well, some of the lures come with heavy wire curve point tip hooks, and i like light wire round bend hooks. also, the stock hooks are usaully pretty junky,so you increase your hook up to land ratio alot.

Huh, I just don't fish cranks much. Is it usually the cheaper brands that have crap hooks or is it most brands anyway? I have a box full of fat free shads, rapalas, and bombers, should I change the hooks on some of em?

Ha, Ya the lake I fish is an old canyon damed up. It is only about 10 years old and there isn't but about 100 square yards of open ground in the entire 30 square mile lake. Mesquite and oak trees everwhere. Everything we fish we lose but sure are some good fish.

I also love the triple grips. For the price and performance and quality it is hard to go wrong with Mustad TGs and VMCs. I would believe gammies have good trebles and I do use many of their single hooks, but price for performance has me going to VMCs.

The Rapala Hooks aren't bad but in my opinion, on some of the shallow/mid-range cranks, the hooks are too small. I don't understand why manufacturers feel the need to put puny hooks on lures. Anyway, I usually go up a size and use #4 Katsu's in the front and back (eventhough the hooks in the front and back are usually different sizes). It hasn't compromised the action of the bait and I truly believe that I have a better hook-up ratio.

Well time is the answer. It takes time to become an old timer and good. Everyone has to pay there dues. Evil laughter insuing from deep within my bowels.
Dampeoples The stein is a VERY VERY secret lure that very few have had the pleasure of fishing with. Be careful how many questions you ask about the stein as you might get visited by very LARGE men dressed in black suits that do not know what humor is.

Hey zooker, I recall that you mentioned that you would give a Stein to whomever won your fishing tournament. Did you give up a Stein? Just curious.
