Another spend my money thread
Ok here it is. I've got a pretty all around setup, a 6.4:1 BPS proqualif baitcaster, on a 7' MH fast action BPS proqualif rod. I use it for everything except light lures, and weightless plastics (spinning setup).
I'm looking to add another baitcast setup. Looking to spend $200-$250. I don't fish a lot of cranks, and very rarely ever deep diving. Fish a lot of jigs, chatterbaits, spinners, frogs and trigs. I'm think that as a 3rd rod maybe another general use, maybe slightly technique specific setup. I'm looking for some input on rod, reel and reel speed. |

Maybe a heavy 7' 6"- 8' flippin stick for those hard to reach places. for a reel my personal opinion is the revo s cheap but has a mean drag. for the rod im loving my veritas but i also i have a mojo that has been pretty good to me. oh yeah 65# braid. good luck on you combo hunt.
P.s. dont limit yourself by not thowing diving plugs. you wouldnt build a house with a square and no level. lures are tools, use the one that fits the job at hand. maybe a medium rod with a parabolic bend and a slow retrieve reel? Last edited by mrmuskie5; 07-12-11 at 08:42 AM. |

Well, considering what you have and the fact that you like to use jigs and frogs, a decent setup I would consider would be a Revo S paired with a Garcia Vendetta 7'3" heavy/extra fast, spooled with 20 pound Flourocarbon or 50 pound braid. That would be a nice compliment to what you have now and would allow you to work deep in the heavy cover with confidence.

There's a couple ways you could go from where you are now. What you need is another good all around rod. From what you fish, I'd go with a rod heavier than your current one.
A 7'-7'4" H F rod should cover you on the jigs and frogs. There are many good brands to choose from in your price range ($150-175). One of my personal favorites brands is Dobyns Rods, and the Savvy series falls right into your price range. And they're introducing Micro Guides on Savvy rods this ICAST. Powell also makes a good rod in your price range. My third choice would probably be the Shimano Crucial. For a reel, I like a 7:1 gear ratio with 30"+ retrieve rate. Again, brand is personal preference, but the BPS PQ is a good reel for the price. For line, 30-50lb braid should do for frog and jig fishing. My new favorite braid is Sufix 832, but good old Sufix Performance Braid is always a great choice. BB

Yeah, maybe a flippin' stick for the heavy things. I'd personally prefer a 7' H rod, not into those 7' 6" or longer rods. Will handle any kind of flippin' & of course frogs. I'm partial to rods with a full cork handle. BPS & Shimano make great rods that fit my style. For your reel, an on-sale Curado would be excellent (7.3:1 ratio) but a Revo S would also be nice.

OK,
So I just got my Lew Speed Spool 7.1:1, with an Abu Varitas 7'0 MH. This thing is great. Very sleek, and casts well. Although not as easy a reel to cast as my BPS PQ but great. I think its going to be a great setup. |

Sounds awesome! I think I probably would have gone with the same combo at that price, hope you like it!

What about the Lews do you find harder to cast than your P.Q.?

When I say harder, only slightly, as I can almost cast my BPS barely thumbing the spool where I feel the Lews requires more thumbing.
Also, the Lews only has a magnetic brake, where the BPS has a magnetic & centrifical brakes |
