Default Non-Boater advice and Tips Needed

Hey guys! After nearly 4 seasons of fishing under my belt, I am actually going to get a chance to go fishing from a boat for the second time ever for bass. And it is going to be on a real bass boat! I am so stoked that I cannot wait.

However, I would like to know if you boaters and non-boaters can share with me anything tips and things I should know or at least be mindful of. I don't want to make it my last trip either.

Some things I do plan to take the initiative on are:

Bringing some grub and coffee
Offering $$$ for gas
Bringing 3-4 rigs (already approved by the boat owner)
Life vest and appropriate clothing.

So thanks in advance. I am heading out this Tuesday in the usual, brutal, overcast, windy winter conditions that make most bass anglers quit this time of year in the Pacific Northwest. I imagine if we find good spots, the drop shot is going to nail so bass, hopefully some smallies.

And yes, I've only fished for bass from a boat once ever.

really it sounds like you have it covered pretty well. i might add, don't throw too far ahead of you and make the guy working his tail off running the trolling motor feel rushed.

Also one thing you should always do is communicate. Like if you have a fish on say "NET NET" or "FISH ON" just say something. Also if you get hung let your boater know, don't be embarrassed because it happens to all of us. Have a good trip!

good tips skeeter and you reminded me of something else. IB i assume since you haven't spent much time fishing out of a boat that you probably haven't had much experience with a net. when he gets a fish on ask if he needs the net, the sooner you know to get it the less you will panic and get it hung up. (they can and will get hung on anything so don't lay stuff on the net to make your chances worse). if he does need the net stay calm and get the net and go towards the front of the boat and get ready. don't just hang out with the net in the water, hold it up and out of his way. you will know when the fish is done and it's time to net him. get the net under the fish and be sure not to bang it around on him (this will often knock the hook out). you will be fine, just relax and have fun. i am sure he doesn't expect you to be kvd, and like skeeter said we all get hung up and get backlashes, it just happens. so if it happens to you don't feel emberassed.

Thanks alot guys! The advice with the net will help from being a deer in the headlights. I'm geared up and ready to go:

7' ML Lamiglas Drop Shot Special Rod, size 20 Rapala 6Sxi, 6# SeaGuar Invizx
6'10" MH Shimano Crucial, Curado 201DHSV, 12# Yo Zuri Hybrid (Jigs or Other non drop shot plastics)
6'6" M Lamiglas Competitor, Cardiff 301A, 10# Stren Magnathin Mono (cranks and jerks)
Maybe 6'6" Shimano Compre MH, Symetre 2500, 8# PLine Fluoroclear (Other non drop shot plastics, shakey head, and everything else)

I have a feeling we're going to be delving into a heavily finesse theatre given a steady period of cold (low 30s at night to upper 30s lower 40s) and clear (surprisingly) skies.

Please dear Lord, bless us with some fish. I haven't gone bass fishing since September of last year, and keep my overruns to a minimum.

good luck, and remember no matter how bad it might be you could be stuck inside.

I hear you. To me, a crappy day of fishing in miserable weather is better than a good day in the office.

Good luck IB! I'm not sure what you will be fishing but I usually fish something different from the boater when I'm in the back. If he has a Jig then I'll throw a Senko or something different. If your fishing open water stuff then it won't matter as much. Go get em!

One other thing...I know you're used to the cold weather...but if his boat doesn't have a cowl for the passenger then that wind will cut right thru ya...be prepared for that as well!! Good Fishing!

Ha!! Even with my wind proof jacket, at blasting at about 55 mph in 29 degree weather the wind felt like tiny little stilettos. I was beyond frozen. I could barely move my fingers despite wearing a pair of gloves and mittens, both designed from winter and fishing!

We fished for nearly 5 hours and one beautiful smallie to show for it. She was 4lb 11 oz. I went home skunked but almost landed my first jig bass. I lost it at the end. Arrrghhh! As a matter of fact, nothing except a jig worked, not even my beloved drop shot. Still, despite the cold, frigid temps, it was a lot of fun. We didn't find them until we got to the 5th and last spot at about 65' deep. Sorry, that I didn't take pics.

The tips were great so thanks to everyone again. He declined the gas money but accepted that I pay the $8 boat launch fee.

I'm going out on a bass boat for my first time this summer. I will also get to use the $650 Shimano Calais.

needless to say, I can't wait, so I know how ya feel IB.

I got to enjoy the feeling of that (Riding first time in a bass boat) this Fall (November), with Bender. We got out to Kent Lake, MI and unfortunately only caught one(1) Pike. Hope we can get out again, Bender!

my dad bought 8 of the calais about 3 years ago. great reels, but not worth all the extra money when you can get 2 or 3 for the price of one that are almost as good as them.when he bought them they were only about $350 or $360 each.

They do sell cheaper model Calais's, Kicker. They're in the $350.00 range.
