Default Floatation...

Will adding flotation foam under the decks of my boat allow my boat to carry more weight?

Well, I think anytime you start trying to change "capacity", this would be something you would have to have certified (by the manufacturer or the CG probably). You can't just add something and say you now have increased the capacity. This is done at the design and building phase of the boat. Technically you probably would be able to increase the capacity, but legally?? I kinda doubt it. I expect there are other considerations that goes into the calculation of the capacity than just adding "Foam."

NO! COMPLETE, TOTAL NO! THE ANSWER IS NO!

All the foam will do is float a boat that is filled with water. It is a safety feature. It does not, under any circumstances increase the total amount of weight a boat can handle. It actually slightly lessens it cause even foam weighs something.

A thing floats only if weighs less than the amount of water it displaces. An empty hull can carry more weight than anything, but when you start adding things inside the hull - even if they float like foam - it takes away from what the boat can carry. The only possitive being if the boat is swamped it might not sink to the bottom.
