Lillypads

There is a pond a few miles from my house that I have been fishing for a while but have only caught one bass out of it.

It is about 6 or 7 acres and has lillypads all the way around the bank that go out about 20 feet out into the lake. Any suggestions on what I need to do to catch more??

I'd throw something like a Zoom Horny toad for topwater and a Senko-type bait for subsurface. Braid isn't a bad idea, either.

After you have the proper set-up, rod, reel and power pro ( or your choice brand of line) get some toad type baits, buzzbaits, lizards. There are other types of frog and rat(mice) baits that work good also. Other plastics work also. Work the edges of the pads if you are afraid to cast into the middle or beyond at first. Once you start to throw into the pads see what the fish want that day. By that see if they want a top water bite-fast or slow presentation. If not let the baits rest and fall off one pad and sink some. Vary your casts until see what they want. Try a senko type plastic and let it sink right in the pads. Also a texas rigged worm with the weight pegged. Mike Ike doesn't peg his weights and swims the bait to a pad and lets the bait find the "V" in a pad and yo -yo's his bait. Just remember no exposed hook baits.

Thanks, I bought some tiki sticks and a black jitterbug earlier today, will those help with the lillypads?

Don't throw that jitter in those pads unless you want to go swimming to get it back. Any exposed hook will catch a pad or stem and you probably will lose the bait. With braided line you might get it back but that's no fun trying to pull your bait out of a snag every cast. If you have an open lane between the pads try the jitter bug. The tiki sticks should work.

OK thanks for the help!! The one bass I caught out of this pond was a 5lb largemouth caught by casting a 6" motoroil zoom u-tail onto the lillypads, then letting it dropinto the gaps between them. Thanks again for all the help!!

jig with braid. pretty much anything its most likely going to be a reaction bite so anything will work.

If it's a solid ring around the lake. I would attempt to clean some casting lanes. I would use braid and a treble hook, cast and retrieve trying to pull the pads in. Also a steel rake works. Make a lane to shore. Won't be worth a crap for a day or two, but will create a nice casting lane and ambush point's for bass. Then you can open up some more options for other baits. If possible do this at 2-3 areas.

Throw a Zoom Super Fluke. They are very Weedless and I catch tons of fish on them.

I'd throw a T-rigged tiki or zoom worm right into the lillies, either give it a good amount of weight and fish under them, or give little to no weight and fish on top of them, letting the worm fall into the gaps every now and then, a lot of times the bass will hit the worm as it falls through a gap, so be ready. If the pond isnt that deep, i'd fish the lillies in the heat of the day, they provide shade and cooler water.

Well a Lizard works pretty well in this situation rotfl. Flukes are also a good bait. Look for something different in the pads, either a piece of wood, some bigger or smaller pads, different weeds of any type, just something different. The bass will be in there, and I would also throw a spinnerbait. It gets through pads pretty well. As already stated, braid would be the best choice of line, or Firelien, and a good MH or Heavy rod.

I like braid to saw through the pads. You're confidence baits will work, provided they're fairly weedless.

Am I the only one who thinks that the Bronze Eye Frogs are rediculously awesome at catching fish in pads... Sub one of those in for the jitterbug. totally weedless, great big bass bait...

Another lure that works very well in those conditions is a 1/2 black Johnsons spoon with a black for frog trailer. Just work it slowly through the pads, and if you get a strike, make sure you feel the weight of the bass holding it before setting the hook. Otherwise, you might find a Johnson Spoon flying back at you.
