swapping hooks
Just finished reading an article in the Jan. issue of Bassmaster by KVD about swapping the hooks out on new crankbaits. If the hooks are no good, then why don’t they put the good hooks on in the first place? I don’t mind paying an extra dollar for the bait. Actually that’s about what it costs to buy the better hooks anyhow. Just wondering.

I don't think they're saying the orig hooks are inferior, he just prefers his short shank hooks. I might be wrong.

I haven't read the article, but I replace really rotten hooks, such as those that come with my favorite lure, the Jitterbug. If the hooks are halfway decent and a few strokes with a hook file can put on a point that passes the thumbnail test, then I do just that.

The hooks are not the best on red eye shads. Had one straighten out on a big bass. I think it is an area where they scrimp to keep the price of the bait low.

Maybe it is so they can broaden the line. Like Zell poppers vs thier normal plug, which comes with a higher price plus modifacations one of which are the hooks, I think.
StrikeKing does it alot with KVD and he's a hook switching feind. Yet to my knowledge none of his 'signiture baits' have hook improvements. My guess it's all marketing, name plus how cheaply minible improvements can be done to at least appear to be different. My guess is when KVD takes out a sexy shad crankbait to fish, the hooks aren't stock. I've also seen cheap lures (don't hold up) that have great hooks. Look at Bobby's Perfect Frog. The bait has less material and same hooks as thier normal frog, yet costs more. Now you get in the $20 plus range and the hooks are usually pretty high quality. I don't know, just some thoughts.

It's a cost cutting move if you ask me and IMHO, it is a place where a corner can be but. The finickiest of anglers will put on other hooks anyway.
I will change them if I feel the need to and Marty is spot on with those heddons. The stock hooks are terrible. To me, the hooks on Rapalas, the vmcs are solid so I don't change those out. They're awesome out the chute.
