white or cream color in the oil means water.. a black oil means your over heating the lower. the stuff stinks. mine goes in green -yammer lower lube- as i still have it under warranty. if your lower is not under warranty i'd go with amzoil full synthic lower gear oil..

If you're doing that you might as well change the water pumps too!

Look at the metal shavings on the plugs magnet if they are few and very fine you are ok there but if they are crunky you may have gear problem. zook has the wter in oil covered and Christopher in my opinion is right on about the pump.

Boater and christopher hit the nail on the head. Change out the impellar and housing and lower unit lube every year. The housing can sometimes make it 2 years without changing but think of this.................you already have it tore down, water is one of the 3 things that keeps that motor alive,do you have enough spare money lying around to buy a power head because you chanced a water pump housing????? Total cost of doing the lower unit every year on my rig is 60 bucks. In my mind pretty cheap insurance and piece of mind.

Don't know what motor you have but when I do our Yamaha 225 4strokes they were a pain in the *** due to the woodruff key that is required to be removed and put back in (the easy part of the two).
