Fluorocarbon question

I have been thinking of putting a Fluorocarbon leader on one of my baitcasters for plastics. It has 20lb powerpro on it right now. Should i buy just a spool of fluorocarbon or a specificly made leader material? Any help is appreciated.

This is an intereting question that I'm also interested in. I fish with braided line all the time
on my baitcasters as well as my spinning reel. I have found that fishing braided line in clear water without some type of leader will drastically reduce the # of fish you catch. I therefore fish with at least a 6 ft. leader of 20 lb. test mono on all of my reels. It seems that fluoro is fluoro whether it is 25 yards of 200 yards. IMHO I would purchase a big spool rather than a small one. If someone here on the forum has a better answer than me, I am all ears! fluorocarbon is definately better than the mono I use. I just have not stepped up and bought any yet.

Ok, there's two different ways to think about this. One: abrasion resistance of the line. and Two:Price

Let's embrace our dyslexic side and start with number two. I personally find it rediculous to pay like $9 for a 30 yard spool of leader material when I can get 200yd for about twice as much. although if money is not an issue, than we can disregard issue two.

Number one: Some leader materials may be more abrasion resistant than fluoros meant for mainline, because with fluoro, the general rule is, the stiffer the line, the more abrasion resistant. And sine leader material can be stiffer because it is used differently than mainline fluoro, it can be more abrasion resistant. Now, I myself, being tight on money, use Stren 100% fluoro for most of my leader material. I find it to be stiffer, and more abrasion resistant than other fluoros, and like I said, a lot cheaper per yard than leader material. I will also occasionally use Seaguar Carbon Pro for finesse baits and dropshotting.

I use braid exclusively, and have found that the Cabelas fluorocarbon leader material (Made by Seaguar) is probably the toughest leader material you can buy. I have used it for years, and have never broken a leader, except in the knot where it is tied to the hook. Attach the leader material to the braid using a triple surgeons knot. (A surgeons knot with the ends run thru the loop three times and pulled down tight. Be sure to wet the knot well before you pull it down) This will make a super small knot that will run thru your guides without a hitch.

Doughboy, Lancer6 is a big proponent of leader material. I prefer plain fluorocarbon line-we have discussed it many times on the water. I find using line is more economical that getting leader material, but the choice is yours. I do highly recommend using the same diameter leader as line. 20-30 lb braid is the same diameter as 8 lb line.

I agree. Lancer was a huge help to me when it came to leader material. These threads helped me tremendously. Line breaking at the knot and Lead, follow, or get out of the way.

I am sure there are other threads but these are the ones that I found very useful since I had questions and they were answered.

what brand/kind of glue do you guys use?

I use a dab of Gorilla Glue on the knot that ties the braid to the fluoro leader. Rubber cement is better since it is easily molded to go throught the guides a littler easier but I can never find it at Wal-mart.

I need to buy some plastics glue so I can repair all of my plastics from this past year. Or I need to buy a soddering gun and copper wire to repair them that way.
