The upper end is away from the dam and the lower end is close to the dam. Not a direction. Mid-lake would be.......????

Joolz, look to the current. Where water flows in, i.e. a river, is the upper end and where it flows out, i.e. below a dam, is the lower end. This will work even with multiple dams.
