Home made chatterbait.
I said in another post I was going to make some chatterbaits that were stolen by some voracious pike when I was in Canada. The parts came yesterday, so this morning I put a few together. Super easy to make, I don't think I'll be buying them ever again. I used to change the skirts on the comercial baits, to a premium umbrella skirt which I also use on my spinnerbaits. I figure I'm saving almost $2 per bait after figureing in the skirt change. These are 3/8 oz which is what I mostly use.

Those look great! Could you put a tutorial together? I have a couple of chatters I got as gifts but only fished with one once. I figure if I can make a crankbait, putting a couple of chatterbaits shouldn't be rocket science.

Good looking baits. Post some pics of the fish you catch with them.

Make sure you close the space at the eye of the jig so they don't fly off when casting them. I've used a couple, two smaller manufacturers, that I've had this happen to.
Where did you get the gold blades? |

Barlow's for the gold blades. 10-4 on closing the eye, I had several of the original chatterbaits come apart because of that. I am thinking about soldering the eye closed, squeezing it shut gets really close, so I'll see how they hold up with use. Any issues I'll try the solder. I'm also going to put an epoxy coat on them, as they come from the supplier the paint chips very easily.

I like the dark chrome blades from Chatterbait. Paint chips easily on those too. Matter of fact all of mine from all manufacturers have chipped. Must be all the snakeheads munching on them.....
You did a good job with them. Guy who finished second in our tournament over the weekend used a crawfish colored chatterbait (knockoff). |

If you are looking to seal the paint I've had pretty good luck with CS Coatings' Seal-Coat. When dipping it is too thick but I put it on with a brush and it's been pretty good.
BTW, I like the looks of those baits! |
