With a regular scheduled deep cleaning and proper lube a midlevel baitcaster will last you a life time and perform at its best. The affects of poor maintenance build up gradually over time and can go unnoticed.

Exactly, itīs not all about: "they used to make them better", itīs more: "you take care of it and it will take care of you". I have these Abu XLT series Ambassadeurs I purchased more than 20 years ago and other than cosmetic wear ( the markings are almost gone ) they work as perfectly now as they did when I purchased them, and not that I donīt use them, I still use them, not as much as I used to because got a bunch of reels nowdays, but for at least 15 years those were all I had.

In showing those pictures I have seen some 15+ old reels that looked almost new. A little maintenance can go a long way!
