Default rod for casting jigs

What rod, length and action, do you use for jigs. I'm not talking about flipping. I am talking casting on ledges. Thanks in advance for the info.

Well I'm not sure what you are wanting exactly. Howerver if you are looking for distance casting a 7' medium action rod will load up some, but I don't care for them when it comes to setting the hook on a jig, especially at distance. Superlines will help offset this problem some. If you are wanting to pitch it out and fall down a ledge, a MH or Heavy rod would be my choice. I personally can pitch a good ways myself, but you would need to peel off line. A spinning reel would work better for just letting something fall. Not sure if any of this is what you were asking though.

I use a 6-10 heavy action Falcon Low Rider. I like the heavy action because I can get a solid hookset.

I'd recommend as good of a rod as you can afford in a 7' Medium Heavy. Nowadays you can get a decent rod for under a hundred bucks. The shimano line or rods are a great value. if you have deep pockets, I'd look at GLoomis or Kistler.

I use a 7' Kistler Helium II MH, though it's a bit more than a hundred

I cast light jigs on a 6-6 MH graphite rod with a spinning reel....by light jigs, I'm referring to 1/16 and 1/8 ounce, some with trailers.....once in awhile a quarter ounce.

My prefrence is a MH action BUT it has to have a softer tip so that the bass wont feel you as quick as with the stiffer tips. Thats why I absolutlry give the hats off to the Airrus line of rods in the Co-Matrix line.

I was hunting for an Airrus, but there is not a local dealer and I picked up a Falcon Expert last weekend from mikesluckylures on here. What a great rod for this! 6'10" H, but it is very sensitive and a great jig rod. I also use my Extra Heavy pitching rod for the same thing with bigger jigs. That one is an All Star Big Boy and it is great for its purpose.

For casting jigs from 1/4 to 3/4 ounce, you would be hard pressed to beat a Loomis MBR844 paried up with 16 pound Gamma Fluorocarbon for fishing ledges, bluffs and rock piles.

i have a 7' mh falcon and i love it for jigs. the longer rod takes up a lot of slack on the hook set and i have not problems with it.
