BPS puts together some pretty nice packaged deals from time to time. I don't know if you have a BPS store near you, but if you pick out a rod and reel to purchase together they will often give you a discounted price. Check their web site for good bargains. They usually have some great buys in the spring.

Look for fishing/hunting flea markets this month and next. You'll find some deals there. I've got a table at one coming up next month and I have two slightly used custom rods rods that I'll be selling for the maker. Great rods for discounted price ($40 and $65). Gander Mt also has some good reels discounted right now. Just be careful at the shows, if looks too good to be true.....

Check to see if you have a Sportsmans Warehouse nearby. The ones in my area were selling Compre rods, normally $89 for $45. Solid great bang for the buck rods.

for the money, castaway rods are about as good as they get. academy sells them but not sure if you can find them on their website because there website kinda sucks. as far as reels go, i would look as bass pro's website for good deals. i hear the bass pro extreme is a middle of the road priced reel.

I'd say eBay, but you got to be careful on there. BPS and Cabela's offer combo's on some rod/reels. Cabela's mostly does it with thier rods though.

As for a reel, eBay would still probably be your best bet for a cheap price. The Daiwa Viento I got for Christmas was $150 on eBay. ($200 in stores)

the thing i hate about combos, is that you are pretty much limited to one action of rod and one speed of reel in most cases.
