not sure what reel you are talking about but i can't imagine 17# being too much.

I use 17 pound all the time. Just depends on what your using it for. It's a good spinnerbait line, but I'd go with 12 pound for crankbaits.

It's fine! you can put any where from 10lb test - 30lb test (all though it's a bit of a hassle with that high of line) I like 15-17lb on my every thing reel, and 16 is great if you can find it!
Ya, not a bad reel for the cash. Is it a left or right handed reel? Left is wwwaaayyyyy better!

I would be surprised at any casting reel that couldn't handle any mono diameter line of 8# to 20# test. The only difference for your reel and any other casting reel in question is the amount of line it will hold. The thicker the line, the less the reel will hold and vice versa. The ratings you see on your reel like 12/140 (mean it will hold 140 yds of 12# mono) are a guide to show you that it would hold about that much line in that test. Your reel could definitely handle 17#.

17# is good all-purpose bassin line.

They say heavier line helps when you're just starting with a baitcaster, but it may just be because it's easier to pick out backlashes.
My waters are very clear, yet I've caught quality bass on 17 lb. Stren with cranks, spinnerbaits, jerkbaits, and jigs. It's not easy to choose just one size of line for so many lures and techniques. Sometimes you just have to fish a lure with less than the ideal line size and type. I would check out Kevin's thread about which line to use in the New to Fishing forum, find the lures and techniques you want to use the most, and get a size and type of line that suits what you want to do.
