Shore fishing

Hello out there. Could anyone give me a coulpe pointers on fishing from shore. I will be fishin at a resevoir tomorrow that doesnt not allow boat access but the fishing is supposedly good from shore. Anything (types of lures/bait,technique, approach,presentation) would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Damian,

Welcome to the forum... I fish from the shore a lot and the most improtant thing i recommend is to not stay in one spot too long, I've learned the hard way..hehe.. As far as lures are concerned, I would go with spinnerbaits, weightless (t-rigged) senkos, crankbaits (depending on the depth of the water), and a chatterbait has been producing for me as well. I'm sure other people will give you some other advice that I may have missed. When picking colors, try to match the forage in there... Good Luck and I hope you catch some nice fish !!!!

What kind lures do you have?

A slew of Rapala cranks, 3 spinners ( white, chart,salt/pep), frog, couple different poppers,white booyah buzzbate...im still pretty new with this..

As stated, don't stay in one spot too long. Try targeting visible structure and cover first. Try a spinnerbait first, then try a jig or a plastic worm (which I hope you have but just didn't list).

try to get some yum dingers 4 inch (bought 3.25 for a pack of 15) watermelon with chart tail or smoke w/ red flake. should work well for cover.

Ok, at this point, i would say start chart spinerbait first. i'm not sure what kind frogs you have. If they are kinda soft plastic frogs such as honny toad, tiki toad..., you can use it as a topwater or AS A JERKBAIT UNDERWATER. These kind frogs are easy to cast, they could fly quite long. A long cast always gives you some advantages when fishing from bank.

I cant stress this enough, that if there is a dam fish nup and down it, then parallel the riprap. I always fish from the shore, and try throwing into cover, too. Points and coves, are succesful this time of year.

Another thing to consider is the terrain your fishing from. If there are a lot of trees and brush with low hanging branches, you may be better off using a rod in the 5 1/2 foot length- 6foot. The longer rods we would prefer in our boats often times cause more trouble when shore fishing around low hanging tree branches and such. And practice skipping your baits on the water with a side arm cast. I often find myself using this technique to get my bait under tree branches hanging out over the water and under boat docks.

Remember Bass have great eye sight! try to sneak up slowly to shore. cast on 45 degree angles so the fish can't see you coming .stay away from where you intend on fishing at least 20 feet or casting distance. Don't cast a shadow in the water, this will spook the fish. stand most of time with the sun in your face so your not casting a shadow. work you way around the place your fishing using bigger baits I find work better because Little fish hand near shore for protection, and more times than not you'll only hook little ones. Look for spots that the water breaks into deeper water thats where the big ones will be.

Thanks for the help everyone! I hooked up 5 times landing all five fish (albeit not exactly impressive fish but nonetheless enough to keep a beginner excited). I appreciate all the advice!

I would get some spinnerbaits and some cranks to cover a lot of water....then some topwaters....find rip rap banks if you can....fish slower on points with plastics...

I took the family camping and we fished from shore at potato creek state park and I used a scum frog. There was muck from the shore out about 20 feet. I would toss the frog out and very slowly retrieve, and in four hours we caught 12 bass. Of course we did not have a camera. The smallest was 15 inches and was just over 3lbs, the biggest was 5.5lbs. It was great, the fish we were catching were in only about 1-2 feet of water, and it was over 95deg. Still was one of the best fishing times I have ever had. I will be going back sunday with a boat... and a camera.

Nah.. They fixed that this year..They actually celebrate daylight savings time now too.
However I don't think IL fish are skinnier than them darn Indy fish!
After all we are Illinois!
