Flippin' with tubes

When you want to flip a tube under mats or something heavy but you also want to snell a straight shank hook, what do you do? It seems like I'd have to go to the most similar bait being some kind of craw or beaver. Must I use an EWG?

I don't think you would have to. I have a buddy that swears by straight shank hooks for almost every kind of flipping bait but have yet to give them a shot myself .

Hi Jooleyen... I don't see what the problem would be using a snelled straight shank with a flipping-style tube. I suggest adding a drop of glue to where the hook comes out the side-top of the bait to keep it in place.

I experimented with snelling flipping hooks and noticed no real difference in hooking %, but it certainly doesn't hurt anything. I've stuck with the Palomar and double palomar for braid.

Thanks Kev. The only problem, it seems, is how to bait lies on the hook. It kind of bends weirdly.
Should I be texposing the hook or leaving inside the hollow body?

Ohh I know what you're talking about now. Straight shank hooks do make the bait hang at an angle off the sinker (not inline with the sinker like when using EWGs). Some baits are going to do this more than others, but I'd fish it just the same. Unless it is making the tube fall weird, it shouldn't hurt anything.

With straight-shanks and thin-walled tubes, you can just let the hook point rest in the hollow cavity, but with EWG's I ALWAYS texpose.

When flippin tubes I most often go with an EWG hook, but they can also be rigged with a straight shank the way you use an other lure.

I would think that if you were to flip with a big meaty tube, than you should use an EWG, unless you made a slot in the bottom of the bait where the hook would go. Less plastic to go through. Otherwise, I think a beaver bait would be fine on a straight shank.

Personally I use EWG hooks all the time. I found that I land a higher percentage of fish with them.

I use straight shank hooks for flipping unless i feel that the plasitic doesnt lay straight enough in which case i use an offset. I hate EWG hooks because they dont stick the BIG fish deep enough. If all i expected to catch were 1.5- 2 pound fish I'd use an EWG but thats just my preference.

J - I've always used an off set or EWG with my tubes and punching grass. I agree with Kevin though on not punching the hook through the tube wall with the straight shank. You'll still hook up fine. I've left the off set hooks in the center of the tube and still don't see a difference in hook ups. This works well with shorter tubes.
I did get a pack of 4/0 straight shank gammies this weekend and will play with it a little next time out. Are you using a snell knot or palomar?
