Repeat Fish

Ok, guys, I want to get your thoughts on fish that you catch more than once. I know this is much more prevalent in small ponds, but there is a good sized bass in a pond that I fish regularly that I have caught several times. It has to be the same fish because it has the same scars and markings. I have always been curious as to why this fish has been caught so many times (besides that fish get hungry). Do you guys ever try to target the same fish after you've caught it before? How long do you usually wait to target them again? Does anyone know why a fish (usually smaller) can be caught within just a few minutes of being caught? I was always taught that once the fish is caught, they are usually worn out and in a sense traumatized by the struggle.

Fish get hungry for snacks just like us, and well, let's just say they're not that smart. And also like us, when they're young, let's say 16, they're even less smart.

Yeah, I know that has to be the main reason, I was just wondering if you guys knew why some fish seem to be more prone to being caught multiple times than other...pure stupidity I guess...

Not only have I caught the same fish several times in the same week, I´ve caught the same fish again minutes after being caught.

Jon, this is gonna sound like a 'fish tale', but I guarantee it's true (plus I have a witness). One morning years ago I was fishing a small farm pond, cranking a 5" chartruse plastic worm. I felt a mere nibble and yanked, only to learn that I was the victim of a failed knot. I tied something else on and continued to fish for a while with no luck.

Later that same day, my bro-in-law and I returned to this pond and I caught a 3+ lb Largemouth. We decided to keep it for a fish feast the next day. When we were cleaning it, we noticed a lump in its stomach pouch. We cut the pouch open and there was the chartruse worm I had been using earlier. It had to be the one I used, because nobody else had fished that pond that day.

Of course, this Bass was not actually caught the first time around. I think the reason he continued to forage was hunger, and the plastic worm he had swallowed did nothing to quench his appetite. In other cases though, fish probably do get traumatized by being caught. I have wondered also about the attention span of the average Bass. Maybe some young fish are just retarded, and it's for sure that all of them don't reach monster size for whatever reasons. The ones that do may not be any 'smarter' in human terms, but they evidently become more wary, as well as more finicky about what they attempt to eat, as they grow older.

Studies show that some bass are more prone to repeat catching and others learn fast. I think sometimes a repeat bass falls to a very good presentation. Other times it might be compitition. And then again they might just be very hungery or pigs.

Male bass can't be that stupid then, they don't mate for life. A 15 second memory is a survival technique when faced with the venerable memory of a female fish with an extended recall capability. I find my memory and attention span shrinking as the anniversaries tick by.
