Exclamation Goin' for it!

Well, I did it. I manned-up and bought some braided line. I figure I'll have to use it sometime, so why not now? I took your advice and went with Power Pro also. But here's the deal...

I went head-first into purchasing it and know none of the knots, so if you could guide me as to how to join a braided line and monofilament/fluorocarbon line, that would be great! I know the Palomar Knot, and the Improved Clinch, but that's about it.

Thanks,

-Lunk-

Power pro had a knot instruction manual inserted in the box with the spool of line.I hate power pro braid but the knot sheet was quite handy to have. Ivan

Default Ouch!

OK, before I go on and on, hear me out.... IT WAS ALL WORTH IT...

Here's how it went down. I was making lists of line to buy, minding my own, when out of nowhere the Baitmoneky jumps out and back-hands me across the mouth!

"What the hell are you doin'?", he says...

I reply by adding a few more clicks here and there and end up $115.00 poorer when all is said and done. Here's the list....

Main Lines
  • 20 lb. braid; Power Pro - $14...
  • 20 lb. braid; Power Pro - $14...
  • 40 lb. braid; Power Pro - $14...
  • 15 lb. fluorocarbon; Seaguar InvisX (!Thanks Carolina-Rig-01!) - $21...
  • 14 lb. monofilament; Sufix Elite - $8...
  • 10 lb. monofilament; Sufix Elite - $8...
Leader Material
  • 10 lb. fluorocarbon; Seaguar InvisX - $18...
  • 17 lb. monofilament; Sufix Siege - $8....
  • 10 lb. monofilament; Sufix Elite - $8...
For a total of.... $112.37!

I did say it was worth it....

LL, I always use the Palomar to connect braid to a lure. As for braid to a leader or backing, I use the Albright Special. I believe that is on the knot tying resource on this website. I've had no problems so far with either of those knots.

Lunk, We are not going to turn this thread into a braid war/ pissing contest.Power pro is fine.I ain't crazy about the filler spool thingy they started putting in the boxes.A double polamar knot is what I use.Did they still have the knot booklet in the box or not ? If not I will post one for you if I remember where I put the one I kept.

Note: In time you will notice that there is a great advantage of using 30lb and up instead of 30 lb and under.Of course that is my opinion. Ivan

Well, Guys, I got my line (most of it anyway, I'm still waiting for three spools).

Anyway, I already recieved my braided line and I need to know how to apply backing properly. Any tips?

Leave about enough mono to cover the spool and use a uni to uni knot to tie on the braid.

That, or any other connection knot. I seriously doubt that if you fight a bass right that you would get spooled. The backing is never reached. It's just there to take up extra space so you dont use so much braid up.

Thanks!

What knot should I use to connect the braid to my spools? I will put on my backing, then put electrical tape around that. In turn, I will tie my braid to th electrical tape and tie a leader to my braid. Is this how I should do it, or should I just tie my backing directly to my braid?

Sorry I'm a pest, I'm new to braid!

Ditto! I usually leave about a third of the spool with mono and double uni the line. The mono will also help your drag. The braid directly to the spool is too hard on the drag on most spools.
As for the knots

Thanks again Guys!

Should I use the Uni-to-Uni to connect backing to braid and braid to leader?

LL, I'd tie the Braid right to the backing. Use an Uni knot, Albright Special, or Bloodknot, they all should work fine. This way, just incase you do get down to your backing, the knot around the electrical tape won't break, you'll just be using your backing.

As for the leader, I'd use any of the three knots I stated before, the Albright special being my favorite cause it's easy to tie.

Brushhog, We had a nasty winter storm last night. There was about 1/4 inch of ice on the road form freezing rain, then it got colder and snowed a few inches. Very nasty. The majority of the counties around me have level 2 and 3 snow emergencies. All but like 10 school in this area are closed, including mine. (and I'm assuming LL's)

Found me a better, AND EASIER, knot. The Uni-to-Uni Splice. Thanks Power Pro Knot Guide!
