Fishing with grass

I fish down here in Louisiana on the Saline/Larto Complex. In the warmer months of the year, Saline is covered in vegetation of all kinds. I was wondering about how to take advantage of this. I dont know many lures that are good in this situation besides a frog. Please tell me your suggestions about fishing in vegetation (both weeds and pads) and frog fishing. I really like fishing Ribbits by Reaction Lures. Any pointers on fishing a frog?? and other vegetation techniques? thanks

If it is more than floating vegetation, like submegered vegetation, a jig would work great.

I'd also add a weightless Texas Rig. SpeedWorms,(paddle tail worms) senkos, and SuperFlukes would probably be my first choices.

There are a number of baits that will work. A frog is good choice. You also ought to take a look at some weightless weedless baits like a Zoom Super fluke or a soft stickbait like a Senko, Tiki Stick or Yum Dinger. These baits you can throw in the slop and not bring 10 pounds of it back with the bait. I'd also work the edges with a spinnerbait or lipless crankbait.

Frogs are number one for me in heavy vegetation. I also agree w/ super flukes. I've been using creature baits a lot lately. I think the size and varying presentation they create are helpful. I'll check the name later but my most recent is made by sizmic. It's a creature tube bait w/ a skirt that has paddle legs. It's presents like a skirted frog on the retreive, but when dropped the skirt spreads and causes a uneven wobble to the bottom.

try working a swim bait on the outside edges of the grass. you can get an aggresive strike from fish holding in the mats.

if there is a small amount of water on top of the vegetation, a rattletrap hitting the weed tops will provoke a strike, also a manns minus one will work, or a buzzbait

I was going to suggest the same thing as JB just did. Traps reeled really fast over top of the grass or a Mann's Baby 1-.

I got some of these and they move well on top of the vegetation. For me they only work when I'm fishing by myself. If I'm with someone else, the other person/people usually don't like to fish as slow as I think you need to for this bait to work.

Also, it's better if you get a couple of friends to pitch in because they cost more than a normal lure. You get a lot of them though and I have never had one wear out or break yet. They sent the 24 I ordered plus 12 or 18 extra as a gift.

MAN i would definently go with the horny toad or buzz frog. thats my fav around anygrass and it works the best. just bring that sucker right on the grass and u will get u one i garentee it!

use a bass assassin and worm and twitch it that works and try a mouse but pig and jig works alot

I would choose a super fluke and like many have said, a rattling rapala fished just above the submerged weeds.

I'd get some scum frogs. Just give them a few twitches then let it sit for a few seconds. When the bass blows up on it give it a two or three count and set the hook home.

Not sure what kind of weeds but here's my pick depending on vegetables present:

1- Hydrilla- 1/4 ounce pegged junebug 7" worm texas style cast to scattered stuff. 1/2-1 oz pegged craw imitation (small profile) or trick worm flipped through the middle of a topped out mat. Can also try 3/8 oz chart./white willow leaf spinnerbait in scattered stuff. Flukes also good in scattered. Boy Howdy or Zara spook for topwater. #7 shadrap on deep edges.

2- Peppergrass- 1/4 oz pegged 7" worm texas rigged. Spinnerbait chart/white willow 3/8 oz.

3- Coontail. Similar to hydrilla except lighter weights can be used since it does not have a stiff stalk.

4- Shoreline emergent grasses- 1/8-1/4 oz pegged texas rigged Zoom trickworm (color your favorite). Work 3/8 spinnerbait into pockets and around edges. Work small cranbaits near edge. Good Luck

Man, I used to live there and yes there is alot of grass. Alot of times, we would to use plastic worms with heavy weights (1/2 oz.) sometimes heavier for "punching" through the grass.
If you pitch into open areas then you can use less weight.
"We" had best success while using black worms w/ red flakes.

And yes alot of stumps. Have seen boats get hung up (common experience) and seen boats get holes in them from getting on these stumps. I personally had to trash a bass boat due to a hole in the bottum.
Saw some guys on Toledo Bend "bust" off a 150 on a stump that they never saw.
