buyers question

Minkota or Motorguide and why? I have fished with a guy who had one of the two and had nothing but problems always needing to have it serviced. That was just one incident and I won't be bias, but I am looking to buy a boat and would like a few suggestions. If you didn't have the trolling motor that you have now, what brand and specs would you have purchased or replaced your current unit with? What maintenance issuses have you had with your current or previous model?

Motorguide. Why? I have a 43lb. thrust, 12v, cable steered Motorguide that came on my 1999 Bass Tracker. It's been beaten up through the years from running into rocks and hitting hard waves, but it has never needed any servicing other than replacing the blade after 6 years, which was very cheap. I expect it to last another few years, at least.

I bought a 82lb 24v Minnkota last year...The first one i bought from a local sport shop in March came and it had 2 broken pieces. Not a bigge, called Minnkota and they sent me the 2 parts. After a week the damn thing gave me nothin but trouble so I took it back and they gave me a hassle so I went to a different shop and bought the same unit for $80 less. Havent had any problems with it since. I never had Motorguide probably cuz I havent really had any probs with the Minnkota cept for the 2 broken parts.

I am currently running a MinnKota 74 pound thrust 24 volt and have never had a problem with it. Have used Motorguides in the past with similar success. They are both quality products and either one will give you years of service if you treat it right.

I tried a digital on my walleye boat (since sold) and hated it. Not because it didn't work correctly but I am old school and like the foot/cable control much better. I was all over the lake with that darn digital control!

Ford versus Chevy debate. They both now adays are just as good as the next. The only thing that I would recommend is stay with the cable steer trollers. The last several years with little maintenance.
