Default Depth Finders

I really don't understand how to use these. I understand they use sonar, but when you are looking for structure, how do you find out what structure is where, and how do you identify structure?

ok basicly to find struture ya have to run over it with the depth finder working.. depending on settings and detail you have the depth finder set at..

here i am driving over an under water hump at an idle.from deepest to shallowest.
coming out of 45 feet of water mostly a smooth hard bottom-old river bed is seen.

as you can see the slope turns into the steeper bank.with large boulders at the base of the slope.

as you top the slope you see a rock and weeds in this picture.

now since it is my boat and i like my lower unit and ss prop. i shoot this one as i move off the hump.

if you look closely in the center of the picture you will see the under water boulders-they are about 1-2 feet under water..

yeah i know the time is not the same on these pictures but i spent an hour fishing this hump. while taking pictures. trust me it is the same hump.. oh yeah and there is some bass on it..

Thanks Zook. So when you see cover on the depth finder, depending on what it's set at, the structure you see on the depthfinder is right underneath you?

So after you spot the structure you want to fish, you need to back the boat up and cast to it?

P.S. - Zook - do you have a link to all of your fishing pictures?

Structure is anything related to the bottom and cover is trees, brush piles, cribs and things like that.

If I find a area that I like I toss out bouys to mark my spots or you can use a GPS. One thing you have to remember is that most transducers are on the very back of the boat so what you are seeing is going to be behind you in a short period of time.

IMO, you never want to back the boat up but make a large circle and come back to it. Even on low a trolling motor can spook the fish.

is right the time i messed around on this hump was done for a reason. to give the fish time to reset after being spooked by the troller on the first pass.
