Default Blown Cylinder Head

On Saturday Feb 17 while pre-fishing for a tournament I got the boat up on plane and it died. I fished the tournament on the trolling motor and got the boat into the shop yesterday.

I got a call about 5 minutes ago from the shop letting me know that the number 2 head is blown. He said it would be about $6000 to fix. When he heard me begining to hyperventilate, he quickly offered up that the motor was still under warranty. I wish he had told me that BEFORE he said six grand to fix it!

$6000 is about right..

my lil 50 cost right at $3000 for the power head alone add 10 hours of labor, tax, ect yeah it would easily top out at $4000..this is on a small moter bigger moters are NOT cheap..

225 Optimax. I had heard that they had all of the blown heads worked out and that was a problem of the past. It seems I heard wrong.

Nitro,

What type of warranty came with this boat, and did you buy it new? Also did you go for the extended warranty, and does it cover "ALL" the costs, or do you have to throw in some $$$ yourself. Just trying to think ahead for once. One of these days I'm gonna get a glass boat, and warranty issues are a big issue for me, along with the $$$$ it costs to repair the bigger motors.

I got it new in 2004. Mercury had a 2+2 warranty on the motor (effectively a four year warranty). As it turned out, the dealer had to go to battle for me. Mercury was a little concerned that my motor only had 21 hours on it after 3 years. The good news was that it was in the shop for a once over the week before the motor blew, so the guys had just gone over it and it was running like a champ. According to the dealer, I am not going to be out anything. Last week was my first time at this dealership, and they have earned my business now. These guys are great. If you are in the San Antonio area, Travis Boating Center is the place to take your boat.

I have blown several power heads in my life time. 5 to 8 is the going rate, For 6 it must be a 150hp. The bigger the HP the higher the cost. They have to get good water pressure and good oil. The thing that people dont think about is the gas air mixture. If the carbs lean out to much they dont get enough oil even on oil injected motors. The other side of that is the leaner they run the faster they go. Fish2win

Sorry to hear that, Nitro, and thanks for the heads up about Travis. Haven't been too thrilled with Waypoint, and Travis is a LOT closer.

Heading to Choke with Jan and them this weekend. Hope the wind isn't too bad .
