Default Popping jigs

I have heard of it a few times for winning tournaments. Anybody do it and care to elaborate? I read a little blurb last night but they did not say how far they were popping them off the bottem but I recall something way back about a guy popping em like 6'.

not a bad idea when the fish won't hit a thing, you know they're in the area and you need to go for a reaction strike.

Shaking and hopping retrieves also work well when fishing emergent and submerged vegetation. I favor popping a jig over submerged vegetation and shaking the lure in pockets of matted grass.
When fishing hydrilla or other submerged weeds, I tend to select a half-ounce jig that pops off the vegetation and then lets fall back into the cover.
A lot of times when you are popping it up out of that hydrilla or milfoil, that's when the strikes are going to come

Basically popping a jig is ripping it off the bottom rather than just a lift and drop. You are looking for a reaction bite-the fish sees it jump, thinks it is trying to escape and hits it.

It is used mostly for walleye around here but........it works for bass too. I went out with a guy who is a master of this technique in a tx earlier this year. He caught 9 fish to my zero (one of 2 zeros for me all year) and he(we) won with twice the weight of anybody else. Then again he has bad days with it too. Google "rip jigging", that is what it is called up here.

On a magazine called "Bassin' Extra" I picked up at my local grocery, Mike Iaconelli does a thing like that called "Stroking a Jig". He says you work it on a drop off where sand and gravel are mixed in. Use a heavy jig he also says so when the jig falls, it makes a large smack and kicks up dirt and dust. To perform this technique, he says he takes his reel hand off the reel, puts it above the rod seat and smacks the rod up and down with his hand. He also states you don't have to do it that way, you can just jig it hard, but it gives it a more vigorous action this way and lets the tails on your trailer flail more as it falls. Just thought I would give my input on the situation.
