What did he just say?
Today I watched a bit of Bill Dance and not paying real rapt attention, in going to a commercial break the announcer comes on with "The Tip of the Day" and says: "When flipping to cover it's important to make your casts as short as possible, and to keep your boat as far away from cover as possible". Huh? Wait a minute. What did that guy just say? Don't those two kinda/sorta cancel each other out? I gotta pay closer attention, because I had to have missed something. It's no wonder that people wonder when a tip from Bill Dance still leaves you wondering.

Sure, makes perfect sense to me. Because you know, no matter where you go, there you are. Stay as far away from the cover, but it really doesn't matter, because my Whiz-Bang 3000-D Turbo Bass Catcher (patent pending) will catch them no matter what.
And remember, the closer you are to danger, the further you are from harm....

"Hmm. That doesn't make sense to me. But then, you are very small. Perhaps you're right."

Simply write a maclaurin polynomial, of course differentiating the fall rate of your bait. Now write the summation for the series, find the interval of convergence, multiply the largest number by two, then square it. This should give you the arc length of the fall, now, draw a graph, draw a hyperbola of x=(y^2)+6, find the points of intersection. Pick the positive number, integrate it, plug in the length of your bait for x, and you shall find the best distance to put your boat from the cover.
I don't remember how to minimize casting distance though, I'll have to look it up.
