5 months ago.....
Where I live there are droughts every now and then, but we have been getting alot of rain. I have a pond at my ranch which my father built about 10 years ago, but I do not go to the ranch often. But now that we go every week, I decided to fill that pond with some fish, I went to my local lake and casted with a cast net, to see if I can catch some fingerlings. All I caught were about 20shad. I threw them in about 5 months ago, and I haven't put anything else since, but I plan to throw some adult bass, along with some fingerlings, and other different species. How big should the shad be by now? Where can I find fish hatcheries in laredo tx, or in south texas?
Thanks, -St3V0

steveo put the bong down and step away from the keys rofl
shad are very delicate and theres no way they can survive being transplanted to a pond, they are hard enough to keep alive in a live well for 1 day, let alone being caught with a cast net and transported to a new body of water. Your best bet is to buy several species of fingerlings, like bluegill, bass, crappie. In a few years you'll see them grow and in a few more the bass will be nice sized to catch. |

Ya shad suck! I catch mine fresh from the river when I go striper fishin' But some die soon some live a while for me it just depends i guess. But I second JB on the blugill/perch crappie and bass and what not I'd even throw in some Catfish! But thats me. Oh and if you could catch some crawdads that would be good too.

Those are good to have, but be careful. If you overstock your pond with grass carp you will make your pond muddy and it will be no good. Put 1 per acre of water to keep your pond clean and healthy.
BTW Grass carp are the best fighting freshwater fish ever! Especially the big ones! |
