Default Sammy's, Jimmy's, Spooks

I want to order some topwater's this winter. Could you post what you use and have good luck with. Their color and what color for clear and stained water. If you want you can also add the Pop R's and G-Splash types also. Thanks

Bob, Are you going to fish topwater baits for the hell of it, or are you going to take the time to really fish them ?:confused :

I will list my 4 choices, that I feel are must have topwater baits in order.

1 Super spook Jr.- you need 2, or 3 colors, depending on whether you fish at night. One is any color with a chrome belly on it . The next , anything with a white belly on it and if you fish at night a black colored super spook Jr.

2 Lucky Craft Gunfish in the 95 size. I use the Herring colored Gunfish 90% of the time. Note: The gunfish is better served at a faster cadence.

3 is a black skirted buzzbait.- The Cavitron is my favorite brand, most times, I buy whatever color and revamp it be black.I like the Gold blades, if they are available.

4 Tiki Stick brand Bamboo stick- They are deadly when stitched across weed beds, or over flats.Sweet potato is my favorite go to color.

I would have listed the Shimano triple impact and the Megabass shallow flap slap lures, but Ididn't think you would pay those kind of prices for them.Bad enough the Gunfish are $15.00 a peice. P N J

I've tried so many topwaters, the old classics, some produced and some never did, but I always here of guys on here that use the same lure and do welll

Rebel PopR in full size, with white hackle feathers/glitter, and black back with silver sides. I've been using that for 15 years and it always comes through.
My second is the big Spook. I own the smaller ones but the big one is my fav and produces.

Buzzbait....I throw alot, i like white, have seen blue or black ones produce.
I dont like one with a clacker, and i will hold them to a air chuck and spin the blades until i get that sqeak, then its good to go.

PNG, I love fishing plastic frogs and toads. I have over 20 different brands. I am serious about topwater fishing. I can throw a plastic frog/toad all day. I think I have fishing them down pretty good. Don't get me wrong, catching them on a jig or crank is fun too. The thing is that top water bite. I started out with the buzz baits, they are fun also. I just didn't want to get carried away in spending on too many. That's why I asked for colors for different types of water. A Sammy at $15 vrs a pak of Horny Toads at $3.59. I just wanted to get a few ideas. JB I don't like clackers either.

Bob, I can't imagine fishing frogs as you must. I don't like them, exept for the days they are blasting the frog steadily.

Another great topwater is the Heddon Dying flutter. They sell for $4.99.

BassinBobby, Those lures I mentioned are results from clear water fishing.I haven't ever had to fish stained, or muddy water with a topwater bait.A buzzbait would be my first dirty water color choice and make a ton of casts to the same area before fishing another section, but thatsonly a guess there. Other than that... I like Jitterbugs. The Xcaliber Jimmy is good too. I'd have to say we have the best luck up here on Buzzbaits though. Booyah makes some nice ones.

BB144, I went to Dick's today. I bought an X-Walk in Silver Blue. They had two colors and I forget the other color. I also picked up two Sammy's. The Dick's I went to is out close by the Pittsburgh airport. They have a much bigger selection then the one close by my house. The X-Walk is what zooker said-big. They come with sure set hooks. Can't wait to try it out.

You better get a Jitterbug. All of them catch fish at times. I, like zooker said, like the x-walk. I also like the Chug-a-bug. I just think they perform better than most of the other popper styles out there, but that's just my personal preference.

Devils Horse and Nip-I-Didees. Propbaits are highly underrated. Everyone knows about Pop-Rs and Spooks, but for throwing to likely cover propbaits are among my favorites.

I bought an X-Walk, but I don't feel that my normal topwater rig is big enough to work this monster which is a 7' St. Croix Medium Action Spinning with 12 or so mono. What do you use to work that thing?
(the walk the dog action was great, never had any strikes, just worried that this rig isn't up to setting those huge hooks)

On topic: I really like the X-Caliber Zell pops, but if I am going to spend the cash I would like to get some Ricos. I have been told that they catch fish when others don't.

Bob, Super Spook jrs. are the one I throw most, with an Excalibur Spittin Image, Sammys, and BPS SlimDogs a close second.

I have had good luck with a clear Spook that I gave a tint of Chartreuse by coloring the back with a Chart Spike-It felt tip.

But still my best top water is my balck and silver Pico Pop----good luck finding one, I have 2 left that are 25+ years old. Keep saying I am going to put them away, but they just keep catching fish.

RICO and it's $22 feather hook - Chartuese/shad

Super Spook - 1960-70's model (only two hooks). I picked them up at a lure show (picked up two for under $5 each) - black/white.

I've got plenty of others but these two work well for me. I probably have a couple more I'm forgetting .

Does the X-Walk only come in size 13? If so, what is the difference between the X-Walk and the Skitter Walk?

Zooker, I'd take the bigger one, but up here (around me anyways) I catch bass that size. My dad and I are going to cabela's soon so I will look at them. I also want to look at the XCaliber Jimmy.
