Default safest way

I have a problem.I just bought a skeeter f80 with a 1989 yamaha 50hp motor.Well today i took it to the lake for my first ride. And it didn't crank. The battery died very quick. I believe i flooded it.But once i got home and checked my battery my charger said it was 90% full.So im thinking maybe i flooded it and the battery was to weak to crank. What i wanted to know was whats the best way to crank my motor up out of the water. Safest way rather.I live like 30min from the lake and would hate to go back out there and it doesn't crank again. Thanks for any reply

Skeeterman, first off, welcome to the forum! Head to WalMart or someplace that carries boating gear and get what most call "earmuffs". They are 2 rubber suction cups that have an attachment for a garden hose. Position them over the water intake on the lower unit, turn on the water and fire it up. The water will come out of the tell tale (pee hole) just like it does in the water so you can work on it without burning up the water pump or engine.

the lil yammers have a funny choke/thottle set up.. #1 most carb yamahas will NOT start -first time- if tilted up. mine needs to be either level or just barely above that. do NOT trim all the way down and try to start it-it will flood-.. #2 pump the ball till it is firm. then and ONLY then turn the key switch. the choking set up has this lil heater unit plug -kinda like a glow plug-it will allow the choke to be ON for up to 30 seconds. if it is burnt out the moter will crank and fire and refuse to restart. this choke timer starts working as soon as the switch is turned..

the lil yammers like 5-10 mintues of idle time. any longer and they will load up. this wont be a problem at first but once you start fishing you'll notice the differance..
