A Different Question About Braid
When I don't have time to take the boat out I visit my local waters. So when fishing from shore what do you guys do if you have 50lb braid on and you get a snag. I know you can't snap it off so do you just cut the line at the rod tip? If you do wouldn't you go through alot of braid in one fishing season? i never take my braid out with me when i go banking but I thought I would ask incase I am missing out on some lil secret about having the security of braided line without the fear of losing 20-30 yrs of it on a snag.

I wrap a towel around my hand and wrist and then wrap the line around my wrist a couple of times so it isn't pulling directly from the reel and it isn't cutting into my arm. I start backing up, often times it will pull free or bend the hook enough to free itself. If not, you pretty much have to cut it off.

Pick up a stick, wrap the line around it a couple times, point the rod at the snag and start backing up. Eventually it will break and not cost a lot of line.

I do it pretty much reb's way. However, you can add a leader of a lesser strength, like 12-14 lb mono or whatever suits your fancy. The lighter the line, the easier to breakoff. That would make break offs easier to do. The leader would break before the main line of braid.

I would suggest maybe using your pliers instead of a stick though, or at least a smooth stick. |

I've found pliers don't work real well. A stick if my first choice (cause braid is sharp and will cut you up is wrap it around your hand/arm) If you have no other choice, put your thumb on the spool, point the rod straight at the snag, and back up. the line will dig into your spool, but it's better than cutting the line off at the rod tip.
By the way, I don't use over 30lb test braid, and my hooks straighten out or break (yeah I've had one break) before the line will. BB

I took an 8in piece of wood broom handle and cut a groove in the middle. I wrap the line around the groove and walk backwards with the rod pointed straight at the snag. Works everytime.

I use a short mono leader of lesser pounds, and use an Oak Dowel rod that I cut a long time ago and keep in the boat (I very rarely fish from the bank, when I do it is usually perch fishing with the grand kids. They fish I bait).
