Throwing the marker for offshore cover
I have been attempting to become a better angler away from the shoreline and start locating and finding fish in the deeper waters on ledges, points and brushpiles that many other fisherman overlook. I idle the boat and find many brushpiles and other good looking structure on my sonar, however I am having a hard time finding it after I throw my marker and come back and fish.
I have been waiting to see the first sign of the structure on my sonar then I will throw the marker out probably 50 feet off the side of the boat so I don't sink the weight into the cover I will be fishing. When I turn around and come back to the marker and line myself up to where I remember the structure was seen with my sonar, I fish it with jigs, carolina rigs, etc and feel nothing. Sometimes I have tried casting 50+ times with no luck. Is this just a skill I will have to practice at to find the cover I mark, or am I doing something wrong in the whole marking process? Thanks for your replies. |

I feel your pain, Hopefully someone will help us. The boat I fish on has it's transducer thing for the lowrance mounted facing the rear. I can never orient myself correctly to the cover it's showing or the drop offs. Is that thing showing a certain degree of coverage? or is it just pointing at a certain area.

Once you identify the drop and see fish on the graph, suspended
or other wise, a carolina rig could help you explore the bottom of the drop , either going up the hill or down..however if the fish are located over a steep drop, you should try various levels to fish, like top water, cranking, etc.. a rattletrap could work if you let it sink and then work it back to the boat.. After you've been to spots like that time after time, you'll know about where to fish without the marker.... walleye and crappie fishermen use them more than bassfishermen IMO, but its a handy tool to have in the boat |

Rather then throw the marker just toss it out of drop it over the side. If you are idiling across it and your boat has the transducer mounted on the stearn you have already gone over it by the time you see it, so dropping a marker buoy won't be dropping in the brushpile and when you turn around you know the brushpile is to the right and rear of the buoy. When you turn around and move back towards the buoy think of the buoy being the center of a compass and your boat is the needle pointing north regardless of the direction you are actually pointing. The brushpile will be in the NW quadrant. Hope that makes sense .

I think how windy it is dictates when and how often i throw out a marker, if its howling out its pretty easy to get blown off course from your target
