Mepps spoons and hairs
ive never fished a spoon in my entire life. from what i hear, they do really well in cold weather, especially on pike, but for bass too. my question is are you supposed to throw a trailer on a spoon? or do you just let the twist and shimmer work its magic. will bass hit it even if a hook is obviously visible?

well.......my worthless 2 pennies. there are several types of 'spoons'. the 2 you have posted are what i call 1 type, but i will say 2 cause of the diferent hooks on them.
on the single hook spoon oyu can put a small trailer craw or small grub if oyu want. historically i have been taugh to JIG a spoon vertically. meaning get in deep water drop it in and let it sink to the bottom. then "jig" it up and down retrieving it as you come up to find the fish. now i have spoons that have a hook inside it. sorry i ain't good enough to post a picture of it. but what i do is put a craw or something (soft plastic0 and either use it as i described, or throw it out and retrieve it like i would a crank or similier. others here will tell oyu more. they will and DO work.

be carefull putting trailers on spoons cuz a small amount of weight will throw off the balance of the spoon and make it swim totally different... usually spoons with red tubes on them i have seen are mostly for salmon i thought but im sure they can catch other species

well that picture is actually from the mepps "piker kit". i know for a fact that spoons will attract almost any pickerel (pike, walleye, muskie) and i have personally seen my friend catch a couple nice 4 - 5 lb bass on spoons as well, but for some reason the blatantly exposed hook makes me weary of throwing it. bass are VERY SMART! haha.

When I use the Syclops you have pictured, I just do plain cast and retrieve with no trailer, and I'm fishing for pike. I don't do that often, but when I do, I have pretty good luck with it. I have the best luck with the Rainbow Trout color followed closely by the Silver color. I did catch a 3lb 3oz Smallie on the Silver one a couple years ago, but that's the only bass I've ever caught on one. Like I said, though, I maybe only throw them a couple outings a year. I don't claim to know anything about spoon fishing, so maybe someone who is an expert on the subject can answer your question.

Try a Johnson Silver Minnow with a twin tail grub
They cast a mile and are weedless! Have always been productive for me up here in Canada. Best colors have always been the traditional Silver or Gold finish. These lures have been around forever. Good Luck! Last edited by docknocker; 04-03-11 at 12:43 PM. Reason: more to add |

One of my favorite trolling baits for pike (northern) is a "Red-Eye Wiggler" ...just tie one one, pop the top on your favorite beverage, and follow the outside weed line on any Minnesota lake. Not what I would call serious fishing, but very relaxing! We've caught a fair amount of bigger (relatively speaking) bass and walleye on them. (By bigger, I mean if we are catching 12-15 inch bass on plastics and spinner baits, we might catch a 15-18 inch bass on the Red-Eye.)
I generally don't throw it JUST for bass... the strikes are too far in-between compared to a spinner-bait or plastic worm. ((Edit Note: Plain silver has always been the best performer for me.)) |

We've had great luck on smallies with the Little Cleo spoons, chrome and blue with single hooks below dams and on rocky bluffs.

Always remember, fish don't have credit cards, fishermen do! Pike on mississipi or canadian lakes all love the same stuff! |

Yeah the thick casting little cleos are great... They catch all species... I've seen them catch pike, bass, and crappie.
