Carolina rig question

When fishing the Carolina rig...If you were using a braided line, would you use a piece of that line as your leader or do you use mono line for the leader? Or does it matter?

I preferr to use a low vis mono leader. Especially in clear water. Braided ine on a C rig is very sensitive but with its low stretch characteristics you can severly wound a fish on the hook set. the mono leader gives the rig a little shock becaue it allows some strtch on hook set and offers lower visability which I beleive gets more strikes.
Several years ago I spooled up with Spider wire for the first time. It was on a 71/2 foot flipping stick. I rigged a C rig up and began to work a point. The first strike I got was so much harder than what I had ever felt with mono that I over reacted on the hook set. When i got the fish in, the hook had torn a gapping hole up from its mouth and out the top of its head. So much for catch and release on this fish. Fish2win

Yeah, it is a personal choice, but I don't try to rip lips when I'm C-riggin. I just use a sweep. I do l like it for its sensativity, but only in stained or dirty water.

I use a flourocarbon leader on mine.

I like to use a green lo-vis line as the leader, therefore the bait is really the only thing the fish sees.

mono, read this in a book... Apparently the best carolina riggin' pros use a 12 pound mono leader.

Cranky, quite a few pros have gone to fluoro on C-rigs for the leader-less stretch, more abrasion resistant, and invisible to the fish.

Well, i can see why that would work, I just repeated what i read in the book, that's all.

Reb, that's the same reason I went to the low-vis. It's 15lb Stren High Impact line, not much stretch an very resistant to abrasion and fishing in deep water the line is virtually invisible.

I had never threw oner before today, and I was getting skunked, so I threw a redshad trick worm on one, and missed 3, and then got snagged. I was outta beads, so I could'nt do it anymore though.

Va, the real purpose of the bead is to keep the wieght from wearing your knot at the swivel. There is a small amout of flash and click associated with the bead but it is not an absolute to use the bead in order to make the rig.Fish2win

I agree with Rebasser. Flourocarbon is my main leader. Normally 14 lb test.

Fish2win, I know, but I only had like 20 more minutes, and didn't want to waste 10 minutes tying another c-rig. I've learned to pre-tie them.

I used flurocarbon on Sturgeon Bay and the zebra muscles tore it up so bad on 2 casts. I basically use 2 set ups but the leader is always 14lb XT for me.
The difference is the main line. I'll use 50# power pro in any slightly stained to dark water. Feel is so much better. In the clear lakes I fish I use Fluro as the main line. The other reason I DON'T use fluro as a leader is because it sinks and I like when my bait is up above the dragging sinker.

Have you tryed the xxx worms. They float, you can use them with a shorter leader.
