Actually, they both have the same sized mouth. The eye is just in a different location.

But yeah, there are two basic and easy ways to tell them apart:

1. With mouth closed, if the back part of the lip goes past the eye, it is a largemouth, if not, a smallmouth.

2. Look at the two dorsal fins. Do they appear more to be two seperate fins, or more joined together? Joined = smallmouth, seperated = largemouth.

Also, as those beautiful pictures show, the colors are usually different. That's why up here in Maine we call smallies Bronzebacks.

Like sluggo said (Lone, you are messing me up with the name change )-look at the jaw. If it hinges in front of the eye it is a smallie, behind the eye a largemouth.

also, smallies are darker in color than most largemouths. I used to have a fishing buddy who swore every bass he caught so far was a smallmouth because he couldnt fit his fist inside its mouth. Some old-timer taught him that one, but now he's all screwed up. lol
