Baitcaster ?'s

Howdy all,

I am not "new" to fishing. I have been fishing ever since I can remember. My dad was a great fisherman. But, I have virtually no baitcaster skills. I have been getting back into Bass fishing from a 7 hear hiatus(where all I fished was Catfish) and have been using jerk baits and other soft plastics. I have to work pretty hard to keep the line tight as the line recovery is pretty slow with my old Eagle Claw and Quantum open faced reels. So I am looking for another reel and decided to try a baitcaster. Can anyone recommend a good reasonably priced reel? I have an old Abu Garcia Black Max thats been sitting in the garage for about five years. I strung it up and have been practicing, but I want one of the low profile models. I mainly fish small lakes and ponds from shore or a small boat with heavy cover.

This was my first Baitcaster, It cast excellent, smooth drag, I have nothing bad to say about it.

I have to agree with the BPS Extreme reel-you get a lot of reel for the $$$.

The second is a
Daiwa® Procaster® 6+1 Series Baitcast Reel
Both are really good reels.

No BPS as of yet but I read they are gonna put one up in Phoenix !!!!!!!

If you go someplace that sells tackle like BPS, Cabelas or even WalMart you can get a good, workable combo for under $100.

One thing I would highly recommend is before you get one is to go handle a few-that way you know the one that feels right to you.

Here is a great link for setting up a baitcaster-it'll get you pointed in the right direction. There is a learning curve when using one and this will set you up.

Regarding the rod-a 6-6 medium heavy action is the best all-around bass rid IMO.

It takes me a hour to drive to town. And all thats there is a Mart and a outdoor place thats got the highest, well second highest next to a Orvis store, prices in the state.

I have been looking around for a new rod. I am the guy you see in the Isle whipping a fishing rod around shaking my head and then picking up another one. Oh yeah, theres no link in your post.

I just started getting pretty good with the baitcaster.(Shimano Calcutta) That REB WEB help me get a better idea about how the brake system works.

I'd suggest what I started out with. I got a Daiwa Procaster 100SEL series. It was great for me to learn on with its magnetic brake and all. I happened to get it at Cabelas because it wame with a $90 rod all for a little over 100.

You can purchase the BPS Extreme combo on line for $119.98. It's a hell of a good combo that I know you would be happy with. Thinking about buying one myself to replace a 25 year old Shimano set up I have thats seen it's better days. The BPS Extreme combo if purchased seperately would cost you $179.00, so it's a hell of a deal at $119.00! I would suggest a 6 1/2 foot med. heavy acrtion rod. That combo will cover a lot of bass fishing situations. A 7 foot rod can be a bit difficult for a beginner to learn on, and the 6 1/2 foot rod will work very well.

The BPS Extreme seems to be a good choice, especially in light of BPS's willingness to exchange a troublesome reel should problems arise.
There's another quality to the Extreme...it weighs less than nine ounces; That's GOOD!
Y'see. weight is your enemy. The heavier the rod/reel combo (actual weight, not rod power or action) the quicker one will tire. Sensitivity is hampered as well.
Re the Extreme Combo; If the rod and the reel BOTH meet your specs, go for it. If not, then maybe you should be willing to bite the bullet and select the two individually, even if you have to save up a little longer and skip a few beers to do so.
Always buy the best you can afford and BALANCE the combo to the mission.

PeeYess: Note that the Extreme is available in three gear ratios.
Be certain you select the one that meets most of your needs.
Most likely the 6.2(3?) to 1 ratio will be the best bet
