What kind of snake...
...is this.
I have seen 2 snakes, a garder & a puff adder in the 10 years I have been on my place. My neighbor ran over this one the other day coming in to my yard. He said a rattlesnake, but I say a prairie kingsnake. He didn't have a triangle head or any buttons or rattles. I would still need an underwear change though if I happened on him.

Kinda looks like a corn snake to me....hard to tell from that photo...You could look at his belly scales and see if they have a checkered pattern instead of just white scales....if so then its a corn snake....one of the good snakes to have around....good mousers......its diffenately NOT a rattlesnake.

That's what I thought but I wasn't going to argue with the fella about it not being a rattlesnake. The belly was pretty much a solid white.

I can tell you for sure its not a rattlesnake. It would have a diamond head plus it would have a rattles. I would say it is probably a corn snake as King said but I am not sure. Its nothing that would hurt you. Well unless you are like my cousin who might pull a muscle running from it

lmao....
i have only been scart twice by snakes..both time they struck me..an eastern diamond back hit my snake boot in broad day light..and a big cottenmouth nailed my non snake proof boot. neither got me...and before ya ask you get struck by ANY snake it is going to be wicked fast..weather it is a 6" red belly or a 10 foot python.. by the way 95% of rattle snakes deliver the venom on the second strike.which they can do within about .625 of second after the first strike.. zooker

The banding on the back and sides does kind of make it look like a kingsnake, but it would help if we could see the head.

My boys wanted me to put him in an ant bed so they could see the bones. But there was not any characteristics to make me think it was venomous. I don't care, if I come up on a snake unexpectedly, I got a pair of underwear with turd written all over them.

It is no copperhead. Copperheads are vipers, so they have fat heads (for their venom glands), and thick bodies like a rattlesnake's.
The markings are too large to be a prairie kingsnake. I would bet money this is a cornsnake or a great plains rat snake. A shame someone has killed it (I assume that is what happened).

I know this for sure, it's not a rattler, or a corn snake!
This is a corn snake!

Hey bassboss....yer picture of the corn snake is whats known as the common cornsnake but there natural colors range from reddish orange, to browns and greys.....Breeders have taken that to a new level and now, there are countless variations of colors of corn snakes, from albinos on....corn snakes make great pets....i've owned a bunch of them....even breed them for several years.....lol....easy money.
I can also assure you that Bubba's snake was NOT a copperhead, nor is it a venomous snake of any kind.....just a mouse eater...lol....Unless he's a kingsnake then he's a snake eater too.....but chances are good hes either a corn or a rat snake.....but he does resembles a prairie kingsnake too....I'll try to look it up. After looking thru my "Audubon society field guide to North American reptiles" I stand by what i've already said....its either a cornsnake, ratsnake or prairie kingsnake.....non of which can hurt you....but all snakes have the ability to make you hurt yourself....hehehe. Heres a few color variations of the cornsnake. Last edited by 66KingFisher; 06-05-09 at 03:10 PM. |

Well actually they have one they call blue, but its not as blue as you'd think and what blue there is, is kinda irridescent so it doesn't photograph well....its called a "Dilute Anerythristic Motley" or Blue motley cornsnake.

i too go with the cornsnake, or ratsnake. i have actually watched a cornsnake and black racer fight, fun to see. the racer won i think. when it was over we ( i was an inmate supervisor with a crew of inmates, they were picking up trash along the roads.)one had the other about 8 inches down the winners throat. the inmates tried to pull out the loser to fisht anotehr day, but it was dead already. it is most definantly NOT a lethal snake.
