Mother Nature Kicked my @$$
We had our club tourney on Saturday and it was less than enjoyable as Mother Nature made me her &*@&@.
As Garey and Kory have mentioned, I probably deserve the crappy weather with how much I rub in the good weather that I usually get. It started raining around 0200 on Saturday morning. I did not see a break in the sky until 1130 and it only lasted for 15 minutes. Throughout the day, we would have sleet mixed in with the rain. The high on Saturday was 41 with a wind chill of 37. (the average for the end of Feb is 70) The wind made it darn hard to stay on any spot for me. At times I had to put the TM on 5 to stay in one spot. The worst part for me was the cold in my hands. I didn't change baits often because it was too hard for me to tie on a new one. The other problem was that I could not feel anything with the drop shot or the jig. I did manage to boat a couple of shorts, but that was it. At the end of the day I went home skunked, freezing and beat physically and mentally. It was the first time ever that I did not enjoy being on the water.

Sorry to hear it, Cass. Fishing in weather like that is no fun. What did it take to finish in the money or to win it?
P.S. - I have a pair of these in my boat at all times, but then again I live in MN. |

Only 3 guys in the club weighed a fish. The winner had 3 for 7 lbs. 2nd place had 1 fish at 2.4 lbs and 3rd had 1 fish for 2.1lbs.
So it didn't take much. Fortunately, these types of storms don't happen often out my way. In fact, the next day was clear with a high in the mid 60's. Like many folks had told me, it is a mental thing. The part that pisses me off is that I allowed myself to be mentally broken.

At least you were out there. Just think of this as an experience to inure you for the next time. Seeing where you live, I bet it is definitely the exception to the rule weather wise. What you describe is late fall, early winter where I live when it is mild.
There are some cool neoprene mitts available that convert to finger exposed gloves that I use. It makes knot tying just a wee bit easier. You know it is cold when it takes you 45 seconds to tie a palomar knot!

Being that the rain and cold is not the norm, I don't know that I will buy a set of gloves for it. I use a set of gloves for the colder weather without finger tips. If I find myself in that type of weather again, I plan to cover the regular gloves with either medical style gloves or maybe even the thick cleaning style gloves just to keep the rain from soaking through.
For the most part the rest of me stayed dry thanks to a borrowed set of USMC gortex.

Days like that are pretty tough to handle. Better luck next time pal. Incase you get hit with that again any time soon, I've done fairly well with crankbaits in weather like that.

Don't feel bad Tom, we all have days like that. I love tournament fishing but the truth is there are some days that it's just no fun being out there. But pushing through and sticking these days out also gives you a good feeling in the end. |
