Default trim guage help

I have installed a tilt/trim guage on my boat. 1988 Laser bass boat, 1984 Johnson Gt 150. I think I have it wired right but maybe not. The wiring harness that runs up for the trim switch that is in the controls has the red, blue, green, black, and white wires in it. red=hot, blue=down, green=up, black=ground, white=sending, right? At least thatis how I have it wired(and a purple for the ignition). At first the guage read all the way down no matter where the motor really was, so I took the ground off to see if it may have been wrong, no change untill I hooked it back up, now the guage reads all the way up?

I'm confused big time. Help please...DJ

Update, tried it again today now it reads all the way down agian so I used a short wire and crossed the ground and send and it went to the up position. Back to down after removing uncrossing. That was a test that was sujested in the instructions that came with the guage to make sure the guage is in working condition. Still very confused and don't know what else to try.
