dissecting a point 101

this is a main lake point wind blowing into it. the marker is a danger buoy showing 4 feet deep. in the cove is a big flat. the point drops fairly quickly to 40 feet. water is clear wind 5-10 semi cloudy sky..

the red spot is a boulder about the size of a pickup truck.
the blue spots are stumps
the yellow marks the shallowest parts of the point.

left to right chug bug,3/16oz t-rigged green pumkin bush hog,weighless 5" senko pumkin,bone stock 3/8 oz strike king spinnerbait, dt6 shad color,and the ever slow c-rig-5 " watermelon seed lizard 38" leader.


and proff that there is fish on it -ok so he is barley leagel-




umm this set of pictures was taking september 5 2005 not may 9th. now the question arises what bait do you guys think the bass hit??

Actually, my honest guess would be the carolina rig.

Even though the date on the pic is May you say we are fishing in Sept. My first and second choice would be the DT6 or the spinnerbait at that time of the year. The next choice would be the C rig especially a little later in the day when the fish move down a little deeper. Early, I would expect the fish to be more shallow on the point. I would position my boat down stream or down wind in this case and present the bait across the point retriveing with the wind. I would fan cast at that angle until I found the depth that the fish were using then I would concentrate on that depth. In the fall often the fish are just folowing the schools of bait and a very depth specific to the depth of the bait.Since the pics were actually taken in May and the water temp was 83 i would have started with the top water bait or spinnerbait looking for post spawn fish that had become active after recouping from the spawn.The pics of the LCR are a little fuzzy but indicate either bait or some type fish on a soft bottom at 40.5 feet of water.This means that the temperature induced stratifaction of the Oxygen has not yet started so the fish could be at any depth along the point. Thats my 2 cents worth anyway.Fish2win

look at the wad of bait fish just behind the temp.. 10-15 foot area. it was a bit hard to get the screen to focus in the digital zoom..

Now that you point it out I do see a wad of bait . I could not tell if that was on the screen or the reflection of a logo on your shirt( LOL).With That concentration of bait and the fact that it is tightly schooled that could mean it is in a protect mode and would indicate the presence of predatory fish. Early I would have still started on top of the point looking for the aggressive fish first then the T rig would have been my next choice followed by the Senko allowed to drop or the spinnerbait allowed top drop. With the cloud cover that was moving in I bet the bass eventually hearded the bait up on the point for an easier target.
By the way,This is an interesting way to share different view points and learn different approaches, Good idea, perhaps more of use can offer this type post. Fish2win

yes pnj i did catch him on that ugly looking crank bait. the bass actually came off the grass line. to the right of the right hand stump right on the ledge break.

i normally only use a crank that dives to 8 feet max here go with a deeper one and your next fish will be a striper. the point it self is in the outside bend of the old river channel. you know it when your in the old channel it is 85+ feet deep here.

actually belive it or not i got him on the last cast. i beat this point with a spinner bait and the weightless senko. i cast twice with the crank. last one was a fade away cast -a cast from the front casting deck toward the back of the boat. landed right on the grass edge 2 turns on the reel and he loaded up..

I was thinking spinner through the flooded timber or popper considering the temps, wouldn't have thought about a deep diving crank in an area with flooded timber, too many snags for my tastes.

Zooker, I would have fished the crankbait through there before any other choice you had.I would have thrown the weightless senko on either side of that area while moving the boat to get a new angle to crank from.Before I left I would have flipped a jig through it since you had enough wind on the water surface to bring them up on the little flat.I am not always right though.P N J

Zook, You failed to mention that the lake had grass in it. With the grass, early I would have actually thrown a Buzz bait over the top. Then the spinnerbait and or flipped the holes in the grass. Vegetation is something we do not have here. The TVA killed all the Mill Foil a few years ago.We do have stripers but with the exception of one lake they wont hit a crankbait at all. Cherokee whichhas a huge population of stripers is that exception and they will crush a big crankbait there.Norris also has them but I have never caught one on a crankbait there. What lake is this?Fish2win

I like the post Zooker, good idea.
I knew for sure it wasn't that orange senko in clear water. Those fish probably said wow look there goes an orange shad, never seen one that color before.

Basspro Wannabe,The best senko I have ever used is a Wave worm Bamboo stick in Sweet potato pie color.Its a orange,black,yellow swirled bait but its mostly bright Orange in color.The water is very clear here. P N J
