News on the Potomac 2 items
1. Some kinda spill has caused a big algea bloom back in Mattawomen. Very odd.
2. A snakehead was caught in Mattowomen Saturday night. First I have heard that far south.. Hmm... 16 years on that creek and these two items do not sit well with me. 12 years ago a liquid lime truck spilled thousands of gallons of lime directly into creek and created a huge kill. But swift rains afterwards cleaned it up. Only took a year.. Capt Mike

#1 Not good, maybe a lack of rain has helped.
#2 Pomonkey and Pohick were the furthest south they've been found. Email John Odenkirk at Va GIF, he follows the sightings and catches and keeps records. I don't know who the Md person is. |

Mike,
Louis and I were way back in the creek beyond the split past the RR tracks early Sat. He did have a discharge. I wonder was that the cause. Water was clear near the sand and gravel pit then, real dirty near the swings. Then it got clear again back by the split. |

I was in mattawoman on Saturday morning as well and everything looked normal to me. However, I did see a major algae bloom in Chickamuxen (next creek down). It was the first thing I noticed coming into the creek and it was really a strong bloom. Don't know if the algae played a part, but the fishing was great in it.

Algae bloom in Chickamuxen? On the main grass bed? We ran back to the channel and fished the grass edges on Sunday but I didn't see any algae back there. The guys who fished Mattawomen didn't say anything about algae either.

Bloom is east of Slavins around first bend and in the huge pad field on the right and before barge. It goes from the shoreline way back out to the main creek. Did you notice all the brown dead grass?

Kinda OT - Is Slavin's ramp still open? I used to put in there when I lived in Maryland. It was well worth the 2 hour drive from Frederick to fish that beautiful creek!

Yea... Chickamuxen (the whole creek) was LOADED with an algae bloom. At least that is what I'm calling it. Looked like little floating particulate (greenish algae) in every square inch of that creek. I was looking at it for awhile trying to figure out what had caused it but just chocked it up to stagnation of some sort.
I didn't notice any brown grass anywhere in Mattawoman... but I only went about 1/8 mile past Slavin's... so I didn't see anything further up. 3dKicker.. how'd you do in Chick on Sunday?

Off the back of his own boat. He kept telling me to keep facing the other way. Like I would want see him hanging backward over the outboard "discharging".

Kevin - had one keeper on a white horney toad that went 2.5lbs and a couple blow ups. We didn't fish it long because we were checking areas for upcoming tournaments and knew that the stretch we were fishing held numbers of good fish.
Capt - Speaking of trout (and not trouser trout)....Are you related to the guy on the travel channel who eats strange things, Bizarre Foods, from all over the world, Andrew Zimmerman??? You have a very similar personality and sense of humor. Figured he could be a cousin or something. |

Granted socks are his usual method. Believe it or not, he was prepared. So the Trouser Trout are wearing white paper capes.

Kevin - fished Chickamuxen creek again yesterday and didn't see any algae at all. You may have seen the duckweed blooming or reproducing or doing whatever they do. The small round floating plants are everywhere and at low tide looks yellowish and a lot like algae. Caught a small limit off of wood and grass back in the creek channel.

The algea has stopped on Matawomen as well. Green grass is now emerging again.
Late Night Topwater time again.. Capt Mike

Visited Mattawoman today and saw the algae bloom you were talking about. Nothing like that in Chick. creek at all.
Had a few blow ups on floating worms, senkos, and toads on the grass beds. Fished a Tiki Anaconda for kicks and busted a 2lb bass on it. The BASS Elite guys were on the river in force today. Last open day before the off limits period for them. |
