no, normal for me on a horny toad is about 85-90%. I fish them mostly underwater, though.

i have a 5/0 ewg horny toad hook with the spring thing, and i screw it in and cut between the legs about a 1/4=1/2 in. and just set the hook in the cut and the point on the back. it rides hook point up. i fush iot just below surface and bringing it on top as slow as posible and i jerk it and let it sink.i vary it up

Are you waiting to feel the weight of the fish before setting the hook. I usually give them 1-2 seconds before setting the hook. Also, are you using a straight up hookset or a sweep. I usually sweep w/ hooksets and was losing a bunch on my horny, sizmic. Now I concentrate on a straight up hookset, have increased my hook up rate a lot.

I just don't think the toad hooks(the ones with screws) are all that effective. I believe that keeping the frog down on the hook when the bass strikes actually contributes to not hooking up as often because the plastic has no way to "get out of the way". WHen I catch a fish on a horny toad, the frog slides up the line so I have the whole hook to stick in the mouth, not just an inch if I'm lucky. It also doesn't take a very strong hookset, not with sharp hooks. Is it possible that you're pulling the hook out of the mouth?

il stop using the horny toad hooks zoom makes. i have had better hook up with just plain ewg 4/0 worm hooks..

with the 4/0 cut the slot in the crotch rigg weedless keep your rod tip at 11:00+ that way ya give them time to get a better bite on them.. a high rod makes you come down with the rod -while reelin- before the hook set..

I tried to tell ya..lol. EWG HOOKS FOR FROGS, NO SCREWS! I can buy a 1.50 bottle of superglue and use a frog all day long..and it never gets in the way of my hook. I'm tellin ya, you should be hooking up with about 85-90% of the fish who bite a horny toad, so long as you give it time and set the hook the right way...oh, and get rid of those rip-off screw hooks.

Does anyone have a pic of the regular ewg worm hook rig please get me one I missed a massive bass the other day on a frog and I beleive the cork screw hooks are part of the reason.

Last Sunday I only missed 2 with a Horny Toad. The trick for me is a stout enough rod and braided line. I was throwing them on a 7'6 Grandt heavy action rod w/ a CU200 Curado and #50 braid.
I fish this bait with my rod tip straight up in the air, when the strike comes. I just point the rod tip at the fish while reeling down and set the hook like I'm trying to rip it's head off.
