Default Gear grinding going into reverse. Normal?

I have a 1994 Mariner 60 hp. When I put it in reverse the gears grind a little. I make sure rpms have dropped to idle before I put it in reverse. Is this normal? Don't want to kill my lower unit. Thanks.

Most people do not know it, but you are suppose to quickly put outboards into gear with one quick movement! No syncro's so you just slam them into gear! If you do it slowly, you will wear your cluch dogs out in no time!!!

OrygunBasser is right, Sliding the shifter into gear is very hard on them...You will wipe the clutches out in time..

dang even i know that.

and my dad says i'm not boater smart

haha but seriously. think about it, do you slowly shift your car into gear? or if you were shifting your car without the clutch, would you slowy try and make it go in, or fram it in?

dont slowly put it in gear anymore, or you wont have to worry about it going into gear much longer
