Brand New to the Bass

I have been fishing for years, though i have recently converted to being a bass fisherman. I have recently bought a new rod and reel, a baitcaster, which i have heard they are a pain... i will get through that. the places that i fish are mainly in a small lake, about 30 acres, and in the river about 1000 yards down from a spillway. What would be some of the best presentations and lures that will work with the situations?

That's a very general question Iowa. Lures and presentations vary greatly depending mainly on water temperature, water clarity, and for the river...current. What's the general water clarity?

try starting out with basic rigs... such as a texas rigged worm. then try maybe a spinnerbait, crankbait. Just keep trying things till you see what works.

welcome to the forum! stick with basics like tb said,then move up to differant baits. my suggestion is to get some plastic worms and some hooks and weights and just go fishing! master a few lures,then try some more out.

Being you already are a fisherman, you should pick it up somewhat quickly for awhile, but time fishing is the best teacher. Check out this site

Best site I've seen for setting up a baitcaster-it'll get you pointed in the right direction. They aren't difficult to use-they just take a little practice.

As for lures, techniques, etc, what have you fished for in the past? If you have fished for freshwater species you'll find there is probably a lot of crossover. Let us know what kind of experience you have and we'll fix you up

i have fished all freshwater, and I have basically used live bait for everything, worms, minnows, leaches, and the like.... catfish baits all of that... i have caught plenty of bass and everything, but when you fish that way, you cast out and wait, i am looking for more excitement. Thanks everyone for the advice, I'll let everyone know how it goes, once all of the ice melts, before i go i will have to make a stop by BPS to pick up some more tackle.

i would sure give some thought to a senko type bait, both t-rigged and weightless. salt crawls t-rigged could be productive as well as shallow crankbaits such as a baby 1 - , and the baby 4 -. whatever you use fish it in slack waters where there is a current break or bring you bait towards slack waters with the current. these are a few proven presentations that i would have faith in but there are more i am sure. i just don't fish rivers a lot. hope this helps!
