Hi folks. I've been fishing all my life, but the simplest way possible: cheap Wal-Mart rod & reel, bobber & sinker, and live bait (usually crickets or worms, sometimes minnows). I usually fish in ponds and sometimes the local river, but I've never fished for a specific fish. Mainly we catch bluegill or perch, a few bass or catfish but usually by accident. I just wondered what the basic technique would be when fishing specifically for bass. And I do mean basic! How to I set my line up, what bait do I use, do I cast & reel or cast & wait, etc. Please help!

I, myself, would probably start with a plastic worm rigged on a 2/0 size offset shaft worm hook with a small bullet sinker for weight at the nose of the worm. It will slide up and down on the line and when a fish takes the worm, will not interfere with the fighting of the fish. I'd try casting out near weeds, logs, rocks, anything really and let it fall to bottom at rest for at least 20 seconds before moving it slowly, then pausing again. I like to move it about a foot, pause, then another foot and so on. If you don't have a hit in the first ten feet across bottom or so, reel in and try another likely spot. Some folks fish a plastic worm by lifting and dropping, but my wife has a slew of good luck just crawling and pausing. Yank when you feel anything. Rigging the worm Texas style will work the best for starting out and I'd think a black worm would be good. I really like Cultrit brand of worm both in the 4 and 6 inch size.

As for the weight, as little as possible is always a good rule....I'd start by using a 1/16 bullet weight, (1/16 ounce), or even smaller.

It's really a good idea as someone suggested to have a bass fisher person show you the several ways of rigging a worm. Saves a lot of guesswork.
