Plastic Frogs (Gimmick??)
I needed to pick up a pack of softbodied frogs recently but found that the store was out of the ones I wanted. I ended up picking up a pack of Secret Lures, chubby frogs. They advertise that they reduce short strikes because of how they use clear legs. I figured that part was a gimmick, but the frog would disrupt the water the way I wanted, so I picked them up.
I can not say that the legs make a big difference, but I have not had any short strikes on them. Your thoughts, are the clear legs a gimmick? http://www.tacklewarehouse.com/descpageSLSB-SLCC.html

My thoughts is that yes, it is a gimmick, albeit not intentionally. I don't think they're trying to rip anyone off. They just came up with something new, that sounds like it might work, and used it as a selling point. Far, FAR worse has been done in the fishing lure industry LOL.
I think it's a gimmick because while the bass might not see the legs too well, he does see the splash they are making (if they don't splash, why are they even there to begin with?) and will still strike at the splash to some extent. Regardless, I bet it catches bass just like any other frog.

I would go with gimmicky, but in a good way.

I like the idea of it...Create the effect without the color.
I think it might steer the strike towards the body w/ hooks than the legs...Surely, that's what their going for. You said you haven't had any short strikes on them. That makes me interested. Gimmicky?...Maybe. But what isn't now a days?

I wouldn't call it gimmicky. I would call it a good idea. What were you fishing them in-pads, grasss, open water? Was the water clear? What types of retrieves were you using? Just wondering. I can't recall to many short strikes fishing frogs but a lot of blowups.

Bob, I am probably calling a missed blow up a short strike. That being said, I have seen several times where my frog was pulled under by the leg. Especially when fishing on top of pads or downed weeds/reeds.
