Default Academy Outdoor Monkey

Going to finally feed the monkey at Academy tomorrow...

I want to start fishing jigs.. but I really have'nt fished them before.. What would you suggest to throw when the primary food source is Shad, with some perch.

Thanks!

Stevo, if you go with black/blue, green pumpkin and watermelon you can't go wrong. They aren't really designed to imitate shad, but bluegill and crawfish. Match the color of the trailer to the jig and fish them the same places you would fish a soft plastic.

SteveO, I am with you on the quest for fishing a jig. For too many years, I have limited myself to the T-rig. While I have been picking up pretty well on the drop shot and the shakey head, it's time to draw my cocoon and bust out with some changes.

I'd start with a couple small jigs like Bitsy Bugs and then move up in size. 1/8th oz Bug with a Yamamoto craw trailer is a killer combo.

Alright! Thanks!

I really need to find/build confidence in other baits other than Cranks and Rattltraps!

You might also want to buy some swim jigs, they are fished a little differently than your standard jig but there are a lot of good shad imitation swim jigs out there.

Alright...

I needed a rod, so I got a Team All star MH 6'6'' graphite for my Abu Garcia.
Oh, and also... I just spooled up with some "PRO SERIES" flouro line...man, this is the first time i've used flouro...and IDK why I haven't used it before... its awesome!
I stacked up on Bill series rattletraps (the color where I caught about 10 fish in 30 min...then I lost it :P) I got some Blue/Black, Watermelon jigs (thanks reb for the advice). I got a BOOYAH shad colored SB....oh and I "FOUND" an old Academy bag with a brand new Buzzbait and The Original Chatterbait (who knew?) GOing fishing RIGHT NOW, hopefully I will come back with some good results!

tell us how it works out... dont expect immiediate results from jigs.... they are great big fish baits but they always dont catch hundreds of fish.... it is one the winningest baits ever so learn it inside and out

I am crew changing Wednesday morning out of TX. Just as luck would have it, I have to pass through Baton Rouge. I am making a list now for some jigs & swim jigs, paca craws, and a few other trailers at BPS. Do you fish a swim jig with a trailer normally?
