Default New Setup

Yesterday I finally got that Pflueger President w/ Crucial 7' H.

I have been casting it, and for some reason, it isn't casting far at all. Not even 20 yards. I've been casting a jig with #30 braid, and my tension knob is loose. I don't understand how to set the centrifugal braking system under the side plate of the reel. Is that what it's called?

Oh, and it feels sooo good to reel. It's the smoothest reel I've ever felt.
The rod is also very sensitive. It is kinda wierd to get used to casting with a stout rod. It feels like I'm gonna break it when I cast. Is it normal to feel like that?

Thanks all- Will post pics tomorrow.

Jools-take a look here:

It will help you get the reel set up.

reb,
nice post, it doesn't get any clearer than that!
i always tell newbies to baitcasting to put on a heavy object like a nut and bolt to test the casting, then work your way to light objects and adjust the tension knob as you go..
We use to practise with rattling rogue, but a few "haywire" casts that hit aunt martha in the ear kinda discouraged that activity growing up...lol
plus a bolt wont catch much in the back yard when you practise.
A pond fisherman always wants to see how far out they can chuck a bait, but once you're into the boat/bassfishing mode, all you have to do is reach the bank, not near as physical effort to make those long casts.

I can cast great and only get backlashes maybe once in the wind. It's just that it won't go far. Thanks Reb. Maybe it'll help.

I tried, but one of the plastic things fell off. I put it back on and everything is okay. Nothing seems to be clicking. I don't understand why my other reel can cast 15 yards farther than this new reel. I have a feeling it's the rod.

-The 3rd picture. My reel has some little red bar blocking the little thingys that you pull and push toward the center. If I try to pull it past the red bar, the plastic break thing just falls off.
