I would start throwing those frogs on Rayburn about the time the grass starts touching the surface or the lily pads start unfolding pretty good. You could probably throw them now, but I would think the water temps should be in the upper 60s and pretty stable or climbing for the frogs to be really productive. Don't put down the jig though, just go to some heavier penetrating jigs and work the outer edges of the grass lines on Big Sam too.

One word: Braid! Haven't fished Big Sam in years, but from what I remember I wouldn't flip and/or pitch with less than 50 lb braid.

Yeah yeah yeah we all know Zook is the man for froggin but so is the Deacon!!! And the Deacon says that you DONT need vegitation to toss out Mr.Ribbit. Open water can be just as deadly with a frog as throwing it on the slop/cheese!
I kinda agree with the water temps BUT i dont thik that it has to be in the upper 60s. I think if the water is in the low/mid 60s then you should be throwing it. If a bass with hit a spook or a buzzbait the they will hit a frog!!! there is only 1 true way to find out......Try it!!! |

kvn - Start Flippin'. I caught one this weekend on a Paca Craw flippin docks in 63 degree water. You should have some spawning bass if you can find them. Flip docks, rocks, laydowns, flooded brush, etc.

I'll start throwing topwater when the temps hit about 58. There's a lake here in VA where we whack some big bass on buzzbaits in 57-58 degrees water! I would think a frog would work also.

you said you will have 70* water temp? that is plenty warm for topwater and especially a frog.

the fish are just now starting to spawn ... i think the next full moon will really turn them on. I catch plenty of fish but just dont do good with size. I am trying to improve my quality over quanitity by flipping jigs and hevy rigged texas stlye worms in heavy brush.

Some times a ratl trap yo yo'd down the breakoffs of the spawning flats catches big females while the buck bass are guarding the bed up on the flat. A tube with a gizit glider weight pitching to the break off areas or suspending jerkbaits can produce bigger fish as well.
I do not think there is a certain temperature for jig fishing, either the bass will readily take them or they won't. A spro Aruka shad trap will sit upright on the bottom.you can actually worm the bait with the rod tip to position it on or near the bed and wait for the guarding bass move it off the bed area. C-Bird
