Flourocarbon Knot?
I'm new to Flouro.. recently been using #20 Berkley Flouro vanish... been tying my usual palomar knot... I've broken 2 "nice" bass off using a jig at the knot trying to swing them in the boat... I've used regular 17# line with the same knot & swung them & have never broken one off at the knot... what gives? Will start using the net more!!!!!
Any better knot suggestions? Thanks, Sam

I've heard the Palomar knot is not to good with fluoro, I've never had a problem with it though. I've heard the San Diego Jam is a great knot for fluoro, the fishin fool might be work a **** too.

I honestly don't think it's the knot, but your line. Don't take this as a knock on you because it isn't, but Vanish as a line, simply said, succinctly stated... sucks.
The reason they call it Vanish, is because that is exactly what the fish will do from the end of your line. The palomar knot works well with FC line. I would recommend using a different fc line like Cabela's No-Viz or Sea Guar's Invizx.

I use mostly Seaguar Invisx, but I also have a reel spooled up with Bass Pro Shops XPS fluoro, and I've never had a problem with the Palomar knot. My biggest piece of advice when tying a knot with fluoro would be to make sure you're moistening the line plenty before you start to snug the knot up at all and before you pull it completely tight.
P.S. - I use anywhere from 6lb - 12lb test, but mostly 6 & 8 lb. I am not hoisting/swinging my fish into the boat, though. I am netting them. |

Definatly get rid of the Vanish. make it disapear. Try trilene 100%. The 100% is worlds better than Vanish. The North American Fishing Club uses Trilene 100% in their knot wars to check knots. The palomar works great with it. Several other knots also worked great with it. The fishing fool knot was one of the best or may have won. With any FC line, it's important to use extra lube for the knot. Spray it with KVD line treatment before you cinch it down

FC lines are very prone to heat damage. If you don't use plenty of lube in the form of water, spit or preferably KVD line conditioner, when you tighten or cinch the knot, the friction will generate heat and drastically weaken the knot.

Per your request, here are other knots I have used also without issue you may wish to try... the trilene and improved clinch knots. May the fish of of a lifetime not be at the end of your line if you're still using vanish.

Another vote for Seaguar InvisX/AbrasX.
As for knots, with higher lb test FC, I use the Miller Knot and for lower lb test, I like the improved clinch. I'm playing around with the Fish n Fool knot, which is just a Uni knot with the line doubled around the hook eye. BB

OK, went to Dicks last nite & bought a spool of Trilene 100% Flouro.. can't wait to try it....will keep the fusion on the reels as backer line. Man the line is a little spendy... but if it works, I'll be a happy camper. Thanks everyone.. Sam
