I skip cast quite often. It's just a sidearm cast, just like skipping a stone...same general action. If you do it enough you can really get quite good at the accuracy. At first it wants to go all over. You can really wing it, but if you try for great distance, it won't skip well. If you just keep trying, you'll learn what works the best. I'd recommend a spinning outfit at first, at least it seems easier for me to skip with. As I've indicated, I don't use it for distance, but when trying to make the bass think there is something feeding on the surface, it's great. I think I skip the lure somewhere in the 20 to 30 foot range.

any lures work more effectively than others or are they all about the same? i can see tubes working real good as they have a slimmer profile

i use it mostly to get under piers and hanging limbs.
a floating worm is pretty easy to do it with, a frog works fairly well, and a t rigged worm works decent.

The two lures that I skip the most often are hollow bodied frogs and flukes. I almost always skip a fluke when casting it. Like Mac stated, it is much easier to do on a spinning rig.

it is much easier to skip with spinning gear and I would not suggest trying it with a baitcaster from shore . I mostly skip flukes , sweet beavers , and t-rigged worms .

If you cut the tail off of a zoom speedworm, texposed on a 2/0 worm hook weightless, it makes a great skipping bait for slow fall and finesse presentations. Watermelon/red glitter works the best of the speeworm colors offered in my opinion.

ok cool,, all i have/use is spinning gear, so im safe there., you almost think though that a bait caster would be better, cause they are supposed to be more accurate.. ill have to make sure i get good with it, i mostly have to contend with overhanging trees, and hate casting by them just for the fear of getting hung up and losing a lure, so this should come in handy

I tried skip casting once. Found that I get better accuracy by just standing still......

Skipping baits takes practice. Let me repeat Practice. Did I say that you need to PRACTICE? "I mean listen, we're sitting here talking about practice, not a game, not a game, not a game, but we're talking about practice." Especially with a baitcaster. Skipping senko, flukes, and floating worms on a spinning rod is the best way to start. Remember angle in = angle out. The lower the angle the better off you'll be. I use a roll cast and flip of the wrist.

I've used this technique ever since I was a teen seeking snook under bridges, never knowing it was a proper technique.
I'll tell you what did the trick for me then, just as now. I imagine I am skipping a shell or flat rock on the water. It's the very same technique, only your rod is your arm and your lure is the shell. I refuse to even try skipping with baitcasting and reserve it for spinning. |

Try skipping with on an old Johnson's Weedless Spoon (scroll to bottom of page), or better yet with one of the outstanding varieties of weedless spoons developed for Redfish (see here) that also work fabulously for bassin'. Wheeee-hoooo, that thing'll skip!!!!
