Default Megnetic brake systems question.

I have an assortment of Garcia C# and C4 baitcasters and an old Shimano Tournament 1000 reel. None of them have the megnetic brake system you see on many of the new baitcasting reels of today. Rather they have the anti backlash adjustment knob on the side plate by the handle. Yesterday I purchased the Rick Clinn Signiture Series baitcaster from Bass Pro with the 7.1 - 1 ratio. I am not really sure how to adjust the megnetic brake system dial on the left side of the reel. How do I determine the proper adjustment for that feature?

your abus have an internal centrifugal brake.the rick clunn (i own 2) is a hybrid magnetically adjustable centrifugal brake.you set the dial to 0 and then set the knob on the side so your lure slowly falls (i let mine fall free and use my thumb)then turn the dial up to 7 and start casting.adjust it up or down from there.higher #s means more centrifugal brake.i love both of my clunn reels.

Thanks Dodge. I just got back from the lake to try out my new Rick Clunn reel and what a reel. The braking system adjusted as you said worked great. I've got to get a couple more of those reels. I love mine.

I have found it easy to set the braking by setting it pretty high and you notice as you cast it will short cast and from there you move down, I have found the other way you go by the book to much at times and you arent getting your full potential from the real ( not to disclaim what dodgeguy has said just a little more inference) and if you use your thumb more you rely on the braking less
