Does anyone know
Just wondering why the steering wheel of a bass boat is on the opposite side of our cars. Excluding center mount consuls of course.

It is my understanding that early on they were designed this way because the rotation of the prop and the hull designs would cause the boats to lean towards what is the passenger side so putting the driver side where it is counteracted this by adding more weight to this side. Now days hull designs are better and this isn't really needed but old habits die hard.

Since vessels coming from your starboard have 'right of way', it was best to put the cockpit on that side as well for best visibility, since it is the responsibility to give way to that vessel coming from starboard.
Also, since International maritime regulations for head-on passing closely follows US roads (each vessel keeps the head-on vessel to port), piloting from starboard allows captains to more easily traverse (and see) buoys, small canals, inlets, etc, since the hazards of such will always be closer on their starboard. |
